THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. E EVENING STAR. TH WASHINGTON: THURSDAY... cRosny NOTES. The Evening Star hws ar bown fide daily that of any ofwer dally paper publ Washingtos, nid equal accountubie delay in the re- uilton county, it is still impos sible to say whit is the exact state of things in Ohio, but that Foraker is eleeted by ® large plurality, and it Is alnost certain that | tue republicans have obtained a majority of the Jegisinture, thay ensuring the return of Mr. Sherman to the Seni The prohibiton vote amounts to about 23,000 Votes, a much larger total than ever before, and larger than would have been safe tor the repub- Mcans under ordinary elrcumstances. But this Fear the vote was swelled by discontented democrats, who supported Leonard, as many democrats in New York state voted for Butler last year, In order to defeat the regular nomi pee. Hence. the third ticket was not as hurtful to the republicans as it would look. One curious effect of the election has been to depress Mahone's spirits. Were the Ohio legis- lature democratic, it would become vitally im- Portant to the republicans to keep Mahone in the Senate; as It is, they can dispense with bis Services without losing control of the chamber. The democrats profess inditference at the re- Su.t, but they must recognize the fact that the election will help the republicans in New York, and unless they are really anxious to “rebuke” their President by a very mortifying defeat at home, they should be a little anxious over the | ‘eutlook. ———— i The action of the President in suspending from office the chief juptice of New Mexico for having appointed ex-Senator Dorsey a com- missioner to draw grand and petty Jurors for that territory will undoubtedly meet with pop- ular approval, yet on reflection it will be a little diMeult to discover upon what lawful grounds the suspension can Justly be based. Some pretty hard charges have been made from time to time against Mr. Dorsey, and by most people he is regarded as a rather tricky personage; but, sofar as the official records show, he has never been convicted of any crime, and must there- fore be regarded In the eye of the law as a repu- tabie citizen, and presumably entitled to all the rights and privileges that the term implies. The administration may hold, however, that ‘the judiciary ought to be above any suspicion of mistake or oversight, even in matters of pro- priety, as well asin those of law. In that view Of the case judges will find it useful as well as entertaining to read the newspapers. —<——$———— The friends of Mr. B. G. Lovejoy are generally ‘and very Jostly gratified at his unanimous election to tle presidency of the board of school trustecson Monday evening. This action on the part of his colleagues comes at once asa ¥indiestion of Mr. Lovejoy from the charges heretofore made against him and a tribute to the long and deep interest he has taken in our Public schools, It Is to be hoped that harmony may now in the board, and that its efforts will henceforth: be devoted solely to ndvancing the cause of education in the District. —<—<—$ Since exception is sometimes taken tothe application of the prefix “Roman” in speaking Of one of the leading religious denominations of the country, It may be worth noting that both in the official record of Cardinal Me- Closkey, to be placed in tho coffin of the dead Prelate, and upon his tombstone he is described as“Cardinal of the Holy Roman Chureb, and Archbishop of New York,” and that in nelther ease does the word “Catholic” anywhere ap- pear. Lord Wolseley ts experiencing the fickleness of tortune. A very few years ago he was the idol of the British nation. But the Khartoum cam- paign ruined his reputation, and it is said he is now the most unpopular man in England. At this distance it seems as if each extreme was Unjust, He certainly never deserved his highest reputation; but he did as well perhaps in Egypt as any one who was not a great military genius could have done under the circumstances. ——— See Secretary Bayard should intimate to some of the foreign governments represented here that ‘Washington is about tired out with the drunken antics of members of their legations, who seem to think that their diplomatic duties consist in taking public nuisances of themselves, They may be above the reach of the statutes relating to the collection of debts, and that sort of thing, but surely they should not claim immunity from the laws of propriety and decency, which are observed by gentlemen everywhere. Europe seems to be on the verge of another Dloody war, involving the integrity of the | New Srore: NEW PRICES! = son] <4 ex eke SEEKER pmo 4 ‘>>’ a “ee ® tion to aunounce that ail of our pumerous depart- iments are pow complete.
