THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTON: TUESDAY. October 13, 1885. ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent ma fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper published im Washington. and equal to that of all the iother daily papers here added together. The eleetiog in Ohio to-day Is for and other state officers and a legislature. A ‘Vote will be taken at the same time on two pro- posed amendments to the state constitution, one of which changes the time of the biennial State election from October to November in order to conform to what is now the practice of .all the states which hold this election in the ‘autumn, The canvass of the state by the two parties le(t the issue in uncomfortable doubt. But ‘Ohio politicians are used to this kind of sus pense. Ohio is always a doubtful state, with the chances in favor of the republicans with fair weather and a full vote. The candi- dates for governor are the same this year as two years ago. At that time the vote stood Hoadly 359,793, Foraker 347,164, electing Hoadly therefore by a plurality of 12,629. ‘There was a prohibition vote of 8,362, so that Hoadiy’s majority over all was 4,267. It is with this vote that to-day’s returns are to be com- pared. The following year, at the October elec- tion, when a secretary of state was chosen, Robinson, the republican candidate, received 391,597 votes, Newman, the democratic candi- date, 380,355, with a prohibition vote of 8,607. Hence, last year, at the state election, the republican plurality and majority were almost exactly what the democrats had gained the year before. Atthe presidential election, which followed immediately after the state contest, in 1884, Blaine recefved 400,082 votes, Cleveland 362,280, and St. John 11,069. Blaine carried the state, it will be seen,by the handsome of 37,302 votes, and by a clear so that If the republicans could rely on their full last year’s vote they might be reasonably sure of victory. But various elements of uncertainty enter into today’s vote to make tts issue doubtful. First, there will be a considerable falling off in the total poll, and it generally happens th republicans suffer froma light vote. The regarded ascertain that the prohibition vote willbe larzer than before. ‘The leaders of that movement are claiming that Dr. Leonard, their candidate, will get 10,000 votes or more. This isa high estimate, but even if 25,000 votes are polled for Leonard, the election for governor, ut least, wili probably go to the democrats, as the main streugth of the prohibitionists comes from the republican ranks. The democrats have thelr own troubies, too. dem! They are not united In their attitude towards the administratio y at harmony among themselves. But th ave had no for- mal secessions from their ranks, as in some former years, to offsett the prohibition spilt. The republicans are more hopeful of earrying the jature than the state tleket; and It is e election has its more national fm- portance as the coming legislature elects a suc cessor to Senator Sherman. It republican, it will undoubtedly continue Mr. Sherman in office: It democratic, it will have the dificult task of choosing among several candidates of strong personal following. $< Salvini, who has returned to this country for another farewell tour, thinks that the stage ts degenerating and gives au interesting explana- tion. He says that the trouble lies in the social aspirations of the modern actors. In former times the actor was not a figure in fashionable society and devoted himself wholly to his art, but nowadays he wishes “toshine in society as well as on the stage; his allegiance fs divided, and no man can serve two masters.” As a con- Sequence, Salvini says, “the stage Is almost bare of great figures, and I cannot discover any men of much promise.” He concludes, there- fore, that “the old-time social ostracism of the actor had its compensations.’ Unquestionably there is much truth fn this ‘aspect of the ease, and it has a wider applica- tion than Salvini gives to it. It is no lesstrue of all the walks of intellectual life than of the arduous life of the actor that, as a rule, a fash- jonable career is incompatible with professional success. Fashion is not liberal in its gifts. It exacts an eye for an eye. One may not bask in {ts delights without contributing in return toltsamusement. To the scientist, the mer- chant, the professional man, no less than to the ‘actor, fashionable society is dangerous. In most cases, to mingle in its pleasures and at the same time to continue in earnest work is to burn the candle at both ends. ———— The New York papers do not seem to think that the fight between Tammany Hall and the County Democracy on the local ticket will help the democratic state ticket by bringing out a heavier vote, as some have argued would be the ease. The Herald says “it Is folly to say that there will be no trading of the state for the local ticket. Hill will be traded by both fac- tions.” The World says it is to be hoped that “the disunion thus forced on the democracy on their local tleket may not do harm to the state ticket,” but that “it is notorious that in such cases on both sides the state and presidential tickets are sometimes sacrificed without scruple to promote some selfish personal interest.” The ‘Times thinks that with a good ticket the repub- Means can win in the triangular local fight in New York city. The Tribune also thinks that if the republicans put up the right sort of men they can elect them. ————— The war clouds in Europe don’t roll by. The controversy between Germany and Spain over the Caroline Isles is now said to be as far from settlement as ever, and the Balkan troubles threaten to be very serious. And to add to the ‘world’s contentions, another oyster war is imminent on the Potomac. $$ Americans will be quite content to have their annals tedious with respect to cholera, and hence will be grateful to Surgeon General Ham- iiton for his judgment that all danger from this source is past for the year. As regards this epidemic, no news is good news, Col. Stevenson goes to work again at the post Office guillotine to-day, and the fourth-class postmasters tremble tor their heads. Flood Rock has settled several teet, and there- by settled the success of the explosion. “Bos Or Tax ABOUT THE BOYS AND ABOUT THEIR CLOTHING.
