rrr ING Nernl DAY, OU __ THE EVENING STAR, WASHING NDAY >N: October 19, 1985. CROSBY *. NOYES ‘The Evening Star has o regninr, permanent bova Ade daily cirenintion more tham treble any other daily paper published im Washinutom and equal to that of all the _Sther daily papers here added together. Both sides tn Oto wag thetr heads learnedly and Int sure to win, but are Rot superfinousty certain, either. The size of the prohibition vote Is stil! an enigma, and with that in doubt. the result eannot be foretold. ‘The campaign towards the close has centered about state lesues, to the neglect of the broader questions on which the republicans pitched their line of battle. The democrats hope, by there tactics, to divide the forces of thelr enemy who might unite on the sectional issue, but who are at variance on temperance. How Successful they have been will be seen tomor- row. It secms not unlikely that the democrats will elect the governor and the republicans the legislature. This will secure the re-election of Senator Sherman. The vote will be taken to-morrow, also, on a amendment to the state constitution abolishing October elections in Ohio. What ever may be the other results of the election, it is sincerely to be hoped that this amendment may prevail. The demoralizing effects of Octo ber elections previons tothe November pres dential election have caused thelr abandon- ment in all the October states but Ohio, and, no doubt, that state will now follow sult, $$ During the present week the American board ©f foreign missions hold their seventy-fifth an- nual meeting at Boston, and !t 1s proposed to make the occasion one of special interest, as the “diamond-wedding” of the board. The history of the seventy-five years will be reviewed, and plan laid down for future progress during the remaining quarter of the society's first century. The American board was founded at an epoch that witnessed an extraordinary impulse to missionary zeal. Several of these periods have marked the history of christianity, Great ac- tivity prevaiied soon after the foundation of the Mendicant orders. Then, later on, the diseove- ties of the fifteenth century, which so much enlarged the known world, stimulated religion zeal as well as the desire for conquest and com- merce. Early in the 18th century another Im- pulse was given to the work, and towards the end of that century and at the beginning of thi a@iresh start was taken, in both Cutholic and Protestant missions, which still keeps pace With the times to some degree, —— a oa The explosion at Hell Gate came off exactly ‘ceording to prograin. The rock was destroyed and nobody was hurt, though it is said that had the explosion occurred above ground, it would have annihilated the population of New York city and vicinity. This shows what a useful cushion water is In these discharges, and hence we cannot be sufficiently grateful that three thousand miles of ocean separates us from the dynamite explosions of Europe, —— oa ‘The Virginia campaign is apparently to be fought out on its merits. Both sides are groan- ing over the absence of money. The democrats, it fs enid, are reluctant to contribute on account of their disappointment over the offices, and Mahone {s making fruitless appeals to his northern allies for help. Encouraged by Sena- tor Hoar’s recent stalwart utterances, Mahone sent one of his Heutenants to Massachusetts to solicit political alms. But it {s reported that Massachusetts sympathy is found to have ex- hausted iteclf in indignant words, and that the hard cash ts not fortheomin; ao Coachman Jensen finds that all the helresses are not as susceptible as Morosini's daughter. Encouraged by the success that attendéd Coach- man Schelling-Hulskamp, he selected as the object of his adoration Miss Minnie Garnet, a very wealthy young lady, whose carriuge he aad driven, But Miss Garnet, it seems, is a much more matter-of-fact person than Miss ‘Morosini. She snubbed his suit in the most peremptory manner, and as he still persists in making love to her she has had him arrested as @ nuisance. $< ‘The effort to unite Tammany Hall and the New York county democracy upon acounty ticket has not succeeded yet, though Gov. Hill has been laboring strenuously to secure it. ‘The county democracy, wno stand out against ‘the ublon, insist that the running of separate local tickets will help the general state ticket by bringing out @ larger vote. On the other hand it is urged that with two local tickets in the field the general ticket wiil be sacrificed by the vote traders. It is evident that Gov. Hill thinks there is more tobe lost than gained by Tunning opposing local tickets, ———- The Supreme Court which met today finds itselt confronted by a docket which it eannot hope to dispose of inside of three years. By great exertions the court has been able to make 2 slight gain of late in its business, but it 4s only # slight and perhaps only = temporary one. What is needed is some relief for the court in the shape of further barriers between itand the lower courts. The enlargement of the court itself is not generally approved by lawyers, and if that method of relief is not upon the whole advisable, it is of great im- portance that a reform be made inthe machin- ‘ery of appeal. 2 Seen — The elephants have got back at mankind, and revenged the Jumbo murder by the slay- ing of @ cireus man by “Einpress,” Forepaugh's big pachyderm.
