_ THE EVENING STAI STAR. WASHINGTON _ SATURDAY... Tee Evening Mtar has a regular, permanent bena fide daily cireuintien more than treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equai to that of all the | _Sther daily papers here udded together. The remarks of Senator Edmunds at asocial Feunion in Montpelier, Vermont, last Thursday evening, bore on a question that has been get- ting some share of attention of late: namely, the use and the future of the United States Senate. Ot course, Mr. E.\:aunds takes strong ground ip support of the apyer chamber. He asserted that its moderation and indifference to local and passing clamor had saved the Union from dis- solution, and that It furnished one of the great safeguards for the future. Comparing our Sen- ate with the house of lords, Mr. Edmunds satd that during his recent visit to England he had been told by a meruber of that house that a feel- ing was growing in England in favor of remod- eling the house of lords on the principle of our own body. Said the Senator on this point: “I think that we who are the cousins, not the descendants of the present British people, may rejoice that after the lapse of less than & cen- tury of the great American experiment of self government, an important feature of ourscheme Of government has proved itself to be so valua- bie that it {s likely at no distant day to be adop- ted by the empire from which we separated in order to tound our own.’ Mr, Edmunds, in the course of his remarks, observed that he was now the patriarch of the Senate. Only one member, Mr. Sherman, pre- ceded him in entering the body, and that mem- ber has not served centinuously. “I have seen,” said Mr. Edmunds, “every member from the other thirty-seven states of the Union come into the Senate and go out of it, The great men of the states of this country have marched upon and stage of their great duties in procession and disappeared. New men have taken their places with equal powers, equal splendor of intellect, equal patriotism, of all parties and creeds. a ‘The knotty problem of polygamy, which has baffled and defied the people so long, seems to be nearing @ solution at last. So fur,the Ed- munds bill is working toa charm. Tho highest tribute to its efficiency 1s the fact tRat for the first time in their_history, the Mormons, under ita operations, are becoming frightened and disorganized. Several of the leading saints have declared in favor of submitting to the laws and discarding polygamy. Others hold fast to the faith, and counsel resistance. It Jooks as if the Mormons would soon be reduced to the alternative of monogamy or emigration. It they choose tht latier, where can they go? Canada will not tolerate them, and Mexico looks askance. Meanwhile it ought to be un- derstood on ali sides that it Is not the religion of the Mormons which the United States is op- posing. They are as free in the matter of wor- ship as other religious sects. It is merely the Incidental feature of bigamy that is attacked, as happening to be against the law of the land. ‘The Mormons will not be able to enlist sympa- thy on the pleaof religious persecution. In this country any doctrine is permissible which does not lead to a violation of the law. Hindoos might worship idols with impunity in New York, but if they introduced the ear of Jugger- naut they would be arrested as murderers. In like manner the Mormons are legally arrested and punished as adulterers. They claim that polygamy {sa part of their “revelation,” and that they adhere toit on conscientious grounds. That may be, but at all events they are legally guilty and must take the consequences. ae ‘The democrats are offering odds that they will elect their state ticket in Ohio. With regard to the legislature they are less confident. | ‘The correspondent of the New York World, for instance, says this morning that he would not be surprised if Sherman were reelected. The democrats base their confidence In the success of Hoadly largly on the strength of the probibi- tion vote, which they estimate at 25,000 at the least. Such a vote, they believe, means plu- rality for their tic! ——<—<——+ = —__ ‘The sickness and death of Cardinal McClosky has called forth kind expressions from every quarter, Although the head of the Catholic ehureh in this country, Protestants of all sects Ihave spoken of him in terms of honor, and one representative convention of Baptists offered a special prayer on his behalf as he lay on his death-bed. As in the case of General Grant, the lines of difference between Christians were obliterated in their admiration tor a character which exemplitied the virtues which they hold im common. ———— ————— ‘The action of the attorney general in the tel- ephone suit will convince most people that he cannot be properly charged with an attempt to “boomy” the Pun Electric company’s interests. ‘The correspondence between him and the Pres- ident on the subject is satisfactory on that point. But it was unfortunate, under the cir. eumstances, that the department of justice be- came involved in the case at all, << Ix Connecticut, where the town meeting still flourishes, elections were held on Monday in 167 towns for local offices and the official re- turns, which are now in, show that the parties Keep their respective strength about as last year. The republicans have a clear majority °f towns, as usual, though the democrats MIKADO, SHAGREEN, NOTE PAPERS AND ENVELOPES, at JAMES J. CHAPMAN'S, sgt, weldiw 915 Peunsylvanta avenue.
