TESTIMONY OF BUSINESS MEN IN CONFLICT Wit THAT OF THE COLORED MAN—THE COURT IMPOSES A FINE OF TEN DOLLARS. The case of Mr. John Gibson, of the firm of Gibson Bros., charged with assaulting Arthur Taylor, the colored man who was em- ployed tocarry the transparency used in con- nection with the printer's strike, was called for trial in the Police Court this morning, Mr R. R. in the interest of Mrz Gibwone and Mr'Tnomas ‘appearing for te prosecution. Arthur Taylor, who resides at 1647 11th street, testified that on the 29th of last month, while standing at the corner of 9th and D jizeets he was met by Mr. Biake, a printer, who em im to carry the transparency. He walked up und down the Avenue with i until nearly 3 o'clock without being molested. While passing the of Gibson about that time, Mr. John Gibson came out and pushed him and then struek him, knocking him out in the street. He said Mr. Gibson then took the transparency, knocked witness down with it, and then broke it up and chased witness with an iron bar. Gibson, witness further said, offered him 5 to show him who employed him. On cross-examination witness said he could not read what was on the ney. Mr. Biake told him not to stop if any body said any thing to him, He said he at first obtained a warrant for Mr. Wm, Gibson, but did not iden- tity him as having assaulted him. Witness carried another transparency the next day. Louis Baulbach, a steam-fitter, testified to see- ing Mr. Gibson smash the trabsparency and chase the colored man across 13th street; but did not see Mr. Gibson strike the colored man, nor did he touch the transparency while thé colored man was carrying it, Mr. John Gibson denied striking the colored man. | He said he made him leave the pave- ment in front of the printing office, and when he dropped the transparency he (Gibson) smashed it. Mr. William Gibson gave similar testimony, as did Mr. William B.Easton, who was positive that Mr. Gibson did not strie Taylor while on Pennsylvania avenue, Other witnesses testified that when on 13th street Mr. Gibson went towards Taylor and some one cried “look out,” when the latter dropped the transparency and the former smashed it, Mr. Perry said that it seemed rather singular that there were so many printers around who sympathized with the transparency bearer, and yet none of them appeared us witnesses.’ He Said that upon the testimony of the defendant and other business men against that of the col- ofed man, Mr. Gibson was entitled to an ac- quittal. ‘The judge sald he did not know abont that. = Mr. Thomas had nothing to say in the matter, and oe Bot say heclaimed conviction. he judge, in disposing of the case, said there was no doubt that the colored man was en- gaged in carrying out an illegal act. ‘The trans- arency indicated hostility to Gibson Brothers. he question in this case is how fara person gan xo in using violence to protect his business, The court thought that Mr. Gibson went too far, and im; ‘8 fine of ten dollars, ——» Co-opERATIVE.—The Home Co-operative Pur- chase and Building association met last even- ing at St. George's hall; W.
