Charlies Wise Has a Quarrel With His Mistress and Then Hangs Himselt. Last evening the children of Charles Wise, living with Leana Walker, on Water street, near 32d street, West Washington, ran to the third precinct’station and exclaimed: “Papa has an axe, and js hunting mamma and threat- ening to kill us all.” Officer Volkman, who was in charge of the station at the time, dl- rected Officer Warwick to see what the trouble was. The latter at once ran tothe house, where he found Wise dragging the woman by the hair, and at once took him into custody. Wise was then furious with drink, and threatened as he was taken to the police station to make an end of the woman. At the station he was so weil known that his name, age, and the charge were taken down without the necessity of asking questions, and he was locked up in & cell. Mrs, Walker had come to the station and he wanted to shake hands with her, but she re- fused, and he then said that she would regret it in the morning. About ten o'clock Officer Volk- man, on looking into the cell, saw the prisoner hanging. He was at once cut down, and Drs, Kleinschmidt and Suter were called in, and found the body still_warm, but examination showed that lis neck had been broken by the fall. He had taken a. pair of new suspenders from his trousers, made a noose with one end, and fastening the other end to the upy ot the door had evidently jumped from the Seat: and the fall had broken iis neck. "He was about thirty-five years old, a native of George- town, and did not bear a very good reputation, having been many times arrested for dranken- ness und disorderly conduct. He was a carpen- ter by trade, but had been a slave to liquor nearly all his life, although when sober he was regarded as agood mechanic. He had been liv- ing with Mrs, Walker for some years, and she claimed that he was the father of her children, but they Were not married. His parents aré very respectable people. LATER, The acting coroner viewed the remains at 12 vdlock, and, deeming an inquest unnecessary, © @ certificate of death from suicide. The remaius were turned over to Wise’s parents, This 4s. the second case of suicide in a cell in this precinet.
