THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTON WEDNESDAY... September 30, 1885. CROSBY S. NOYES.....................Editer. ‘The Evening Star has = regular, permanent hema Side daily circafatiee more than treble thas of aay ether daily paper peblished in w and equal te that of all the It seems that Senator Gorman is not to have entirely smooth sailing in his race for re-elec- tiom to the Senate. The opposition to him within his own party is making itself heard, and threatens to make itself felt. Along the canal in some localities democrats assert that they will not vote for any legislative candidate who will not pledge himself against Gorman. In Baltimore there is serious talk of running independent or fasion tickets against the regu- jar democrats, Should the party divide in Baltimore, the result might be the loss of the legislature to the democracy, as the delegation from the city and county is, because of its num- ber, an important element in that body. The opponents of the Senator are bitter and unre- Jeuting. They appear to be willing to resort to almost any political tactics to compass his de- feat, Still, he is @ wonderfully hard man to beat, as the Maryland braves who have sought his sealp heretofore have found to their cost. a ‘The democrats have experienced some diff- culty in filling their ticket in New York state, and the final choice has not added much strength to it. Gen. E. T. Jones, of Binghamp- tom, who accepts the nomination, has a good war record, and stands well in the state, but his selection will arouse little enthusiasm. Just now the episode has rather demorslized the democrats, but the republicans should not uttmeh too much consequence to it, The office of eatenant governor is really of very slight importance, and it would make only a very sumall difference in the vote whoever might be the candidate. The democrats will soon get ‘over the mortification of their blunder, and the ineident will be forgotten when the real work of the campaign begins. eo oe According to the report of Dun and Co.’s mercantile agency the failures for the past three months show an encouraging decrease, both im number and magvitude. During the eartler part of the year the figures were not so hopeful, but even taking all the nine months aremarkable failing off in the amount of lia- bilities is noticeable. For 18865, thus far, these debts of bankrupt concerns amounted alto- gether to $97,000,000, while for the correspond- ing nine months of 1884 the total was $181,- 000,000, or nearly twice as much. The ten- dency at present is clearly towards an im- provement in all lines of business. eS ae The yacht Dauntless has crawled back into port a day after her fleeter rival crossed the bar. The Dauntless made good her name by matebing herself against the speedy English cutter, bu: she now sees the force of the philo- sophie remark of Falstaff that the better part ot valor is diseretion. a If the war had been conducted as vigorously as ts the present verbal row between the Cin- cinnati editors, Gen. Sherman and other dis- tinguished citizens of the Wild West, it would have come toan end in no time, with nobody Jeft on either side to tell the taie. Caneress Mes.
