THE EVENING STAR. WASHIN NGTON: ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent bena fide daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper publmhed iu Washington, and equal to that of all the _ other daily papers here added together. The first effect of the party nominations in Now York state has been favorable to the re- publfeans. The independent vote which swung away from Blaine seems to have come back bodily in support of the republican ticket. Not only have the newspapers which championed the independent movement returned to the re- publican fold, but the organizations which did such effective campaign work for Cleveland are endorsing the Davenport ticket. Last evening, for instanee, the Brooklyn “Committee of One Hundred” which was very active last fallin Cleveland's support, declared for the republican nominations. The democrats claim that the zeal of Tam- imany and of the party In general, will more than xotlset these losses, but that must be regarded asdoubtfal. It already appears that there are disseusions among the factions in New York city, and there is no reason to snppose that the ward politicians of that city can be relied on for greater fdelity to the party this year than in former campaigns. The declension of Flower has also had a depressing effect upon the party spirits, The campaign opens therefore With the ebances rather against the democrats. Even so friendly # newspaper as the N. Y. dteraid says to-day: “We do not believe Mr. Hill can be elected. — The Cincinnati Enquirer publishes a private letter o: Murat Halstead to 8. P. Chase, when the latter was Secretary of the Treasury uuder Lineoln, in which Halstead Is violently abusive of Grant, Sherman and Lincoln. The letter is Produced new for political eifeet, and if the Ohio campaign is to be conducted on “ war issues,” perhaps the publication is not Uktimed. But Mr. Halstead will hardly be held to very strict account for excited criticisms on the conduct of the war written during the dark days of that struggle. The greatest anxiety prevatled in all ainds, and @ mas; of crude and intemperate advice was hurled at those in power. The pri- vate letters of @ good many prominent repub- Ucans of that day would, if published now, speak pretty badly for the judgement and tem- per of the writers, however patriotic the spirit that prompted them. ee The New York democrats are finding some dimMeulty in getting a substitute for Mr. Flower as their candidate for lieutenant governer. Sev- eral gentlemen have been mentioned for the place, but no one seems anxious to take it of those who would strengthen the ticket. Mr. Flower has committed political suicide by his act. ——__—<»--<—___ Race and religious prejudices inflame the excitement over the compulsory vaccination Jaw im Montreal to fever heat. Dangerous riots have broken out, and, between the smallpox and the mob, the elty 1s In a pretty bad way. ———— Frederick Ward threatens some terrible reve- lations. Well, let them come, if necessary; but the country will not take his unsupported state- ments as proof against men of honorable char- acter. ExPEats vs. ARTISTS, SOME YEARS AGO A NEW YORK TAILOR ATTAINED, THROUGH THE MERITS OF HIS PRODUCTIONS, THE DESERVED APPELLATION OF “ARTIST.” BEING HUMAN, HE PREFACED ‘THAT NAME TO HIS AVOCATION, AND HENCE THE EXPRESSION “ARTIST TAILOR” YOU, AS WELL AS WE, KNOW HOW MUCH THE TERM HAS BEEN ABUSED, WE HAVE HAD THESE SO-CALLED “ARTISTS” COME TO US RECOM MENDED BY “FRIENDS” IN THE TRADE, WHO HAVE MADE MORE MISFITS IN A SINGLE WEEK THAN TEN “ARTISTS” SHOULD IN A YEAR. WE TRIED A GOOD MANY AFTER WE WERE DUPED ON THE LAST “ARTIST” AND HAVE SINCE THEN GONE BOLDLY IN THE FIELD AND ASCERTAINED THE MERITS OF THE MEN WE EMPLOY BY PRACTICAL TESTS, AND WE NOW FEEL SATISFIED IN MAKING THE STATEMENT THAT WE HAVE IN OUR EMPLOY EXPERT CUTTERS, WHO NOT ALONE CUT PERFECT-FITTING GARMENTS, BUT GIVE THAT STYLE AND CHARACTER VERY OFTEN DESIRED BUT RARELY ATTAINE!
