A COMMITTEE OF ANCHOR LODGE ACQUIT THE GRAND WORTHY CHIEF OF THE CHARGES AGAINST HIM, ‘Some days ago the dissolution of Star of Hope Lodge of Good Templars and the withdrawal of most of the members of the order on the ground that they objected to remaining in the order under the present Grand Worthy Chief Temp- lar, M. P. Caldwell, attracted attention to charges made against Mr. Caldwell by members ol that lodge and derogatory to his official and petsonal character. A committee of the Grand Lodge decided that that body had no jurisdic- tion of the case, but that it, lay within the pro- vince of the subordinate lodge to which Pe Caldwell belonged. Mr. Caldwell upon the publi- cation of these maiters in the newspapers called upon Anchor Lodge to which he belonged to appoint a committee to investigate these charges and specifications supplemented by eb: e of confession of guilt, in a certain letter Mr. Caldwell addi on June 22d last, to a member of the order. The lodge appointed as the committee Messrs. A. N. Canfield, Wm. F. Switzier and W. E. Wright, ali of whom have signed a report closing as follows: “The under- signed were appointed said committee, and they believe It but sheer Justice to Mr. Caldwell, the Good Templars of the District and elsewhere, and to the public, that they state in this public manner, that sald and specifications have heen thoroughly investigated by them: that the letter referred to was read to them; u all the witnesses whose names were known to them were duly notified and requested to attend the sessions of the committee (and thera were two sessions of it); that having no compul- sory process to compel the attendance of either the authors of the charges or the witnesses re- lied on to establish their trath, all of them did not attend, although notified in writing and re- quested todo so by the committee. ome of the Witnesses, however, did attend and deposed In regard to the questions at issue. Notably, the two witnesses relied on by the au- thors of the charges to establish the truth of the one most seriously affecting Mr. Caldwell’s character, were heard, one by a statement in writing, the other by answers in person before the committee. “Having thus considered the whole case in all its aspects and relations, and in the light of all the testimony offered, both oral and written, the committee unanimously acquit Mr. Cald: well ofeach and every charge and specification, and believe him the ‘tim of a relentless per- secution, and an earnest and successful laborer for the order in this Distriet, “September 10, 18: — Suing the Tunnel Contractor.
