Tes to address fiven below.” Simillar orders are received daily by mall. ‘The New York state republican committee at yesterday's meeting took important action on the question of who may vote in the primaries. Heretotore it has been a rule that noone who nad not voted for the party's candidate at the preceding election could take part in the selec- ston of delegates, This “fundamental test,” as 2t was called, bas now been abandoned, and the primaries thrown open to all voters “who ud- here to the prinefples of the republican party and whose general intention ix to act with the Party and promote ita success by their votes and influence at the next general election.” Nothing could be more liberal than this invi- tation. Jt offers a universal amnesty to the aug wumps and does not even exact a promise Offeaity in the future. All that is asked Is “a general intention” to support the ticket. By this action the “machine” which bas been Very arrogant in the past, admits its need af heip from the large element in New York state whieh is indifferent to party names, If a re- publican ticket Is to be elected this fall it must be by # union of those “who adhere to the prin- ciples of the republican party” and not by the tes of those alone who support its candidate Whoever he may be. The committee have done wisely, therefore, to open the doors of the primaries to the independents with the view of enlisting their sympathy and co-operation. After a series of trial races, the Puritam has been selected to represent America in the contest, land she is undoubtedly as good a type of our Yachts as could named. The Genesta has earned the reputation of being one of the fast- est English yachts, though her record is by no meaps one of uninterrupted triumph, as out of thirty-four races in which she has taken part she has been victorious only in seven. The rivairy between the Puritan and her ehbief competitor, the Priscilla, (of New York,) has been keen, but good-natured, and now that whe former yacht has been chosen to represent the country, the owners of the Priscilla have shown their good spirit by turning over the pick of their racing crew to the American thampion. She will, therefore, be handied in the best manner and thus be given ail the ad- vantage tobe derived therefrom. The Genesta handicapped by the fact thatshe must sail in strange waters, but her master and crew have been familiarizing themselves with local conditions and may be expected to acquit themselves in the good style we look for in English sailors. It is said that the race wiil bring out a greater crowd of spectators than any similar event since the contest so gallantly won by the Magic in 1870. E. J. For many years there has been a rather acri- monious dispute as to the right distri- dation of the surplus millions paid this coun- try by Great Britain on the Alabama claims account, One party holds that the money should be returned to Great Britain, another that it should be turned into the treasury, and athird, that it should be given te the under- writers or the owners of ships outside the scope of the award. But the court, it seems, had still a different scheme. Its endeavor was to remove this bone of contention by expending the money in salaries. But this project is now frustrated by the controller, so that Congress will be forced to again try to dispose of the troubiesome surplus. 2 A New York World correspondent has pene- trated the Adirondack wilderness and in one of its most inaccessible nooks discovered the President and two friends at breakfast. The journey was a trying one, and was executed In good shape. And then, after accomplishing his Purpose, the newspaper invader had the grace to retire and leave the President in the seclu- sion of bis camp. $< —____ Butler denies that he has handed in his sur render to President Cleveland or that he in- tends to go to the democratic state convention, “uuless somebody says I shouldn't go.” The democrats will probably take the hint and give him a cordial invitation, so as to make sure he will stay aws "Tue Canrextens Ane Ar Worx.
