Grant in this city when mentioned was received with great enthusiasm, and he aad no doubt but that it would be done. The movement would be or- ganized by a circular issued soon and the effort made as systematic as possible. Gen, Burdett has written to ex-President Hayes giving his Teasons why these contributions of the Grand Army soldiers should not go towards the New York monument. a ‘The Prisoner Nardella. HE DENIES HAVING MURDERED A MAN IN MARYLAND. The Italian, Nardella, confined in the Wash- ington jail on the charge of the murder of an | Italian named Rotuno, by cutting his throat, and robbing him, a few weeks ago, near the reservoir, was yesterday visited at the jail by several detectives, He still adheres to his Story that there were two others with him at the time of the commission of the act; that the four men went to the house together, and two of them held the old man by the hands and feet while the other cut his throat. He does not say, however, who held him, nor is he explicit about the time the act was committed—saying sometimes that they went to the house at ly o'clock und the man was killed at 24, and, at other times, that the man was killed as soon ag they got up stairs; that after the man was cut he heard the blood gurgling and went to see whatit was, when he got it on his pants. He has been informed of the suspicion resting upon him as having killed one De Balbo atN East, Md., in November last, and he denies it, or that he knows of any such’place. After close questioning as to the murder of De Balbo at North East, the nly acknowledgement he made was ihat he knew De Balbo's son, and that he had gone back to Italy. Ma.
