Brooks, who was arrested on the 4th ot July last in Laurel, Md., through Detectives Mattingley and Edelin, and who figured e tensively in the newspapers as a “Fra Diavolo, hhas since then languished in the jail to which he was committed on a charge of horse-stealing and burglary. Last Thursday nizht about 12 O'clock he sueceeded in breaking out from jail, Dut was recaptured before he had got far awa; About the time named Mr. Charles Gill, jailer, was going his rounds, and Brooks re- ‘quested him to put in his window, as it was getting cold. Mr. Gill therefore opened the cell, and while raising the sash to put it in piace Brooks jumped out of the door and shut Gill Inside. It seems that Brooks had loosened one Of bis leg irons so that he could easily remove it. ‘Brooks went from his cell to the offiee and Secured a satchel containing a new sult of clothes sent him about a week before and a double-barreled gun. He then went into the yard and broke a plank off the fence and escaped to the outer world. Mr. Gill, who had bis pistol with him, fired severa! shots at the retreating form of the fugitive. The shots Attracted Mr. T. J. Frazier and some others,who ‘Went to the jail, released Mr. Gill, and started in pursuit of the fugitive. He ‘had started through an orchard towards the marsh, going through a cabbage patch, where he left the gun and satchel. MR. W. CORCORAN HILL'S RESIDENCE. Another fine house 1s to be added to those now erected or in course of erection on H street, for Mr. W. Corcoran Hill from the design of Mr. W, Bruce Gray, architect. The front, whieh will be composed of brick and brown stone, 4s broadly treated in the Romanesque style. A bold cireniar bay running up to the third story and surn by an iron railing of pleasing desi S an effective feature. The en- is arched over, the arch springing leapsof Romanesque detail. Con- tracts have been let and work will be imme- diately proceeded with MISS WURDEMANN’S IMPROVEMENT. Miss Laura L. Wurdemann has now in course of erection three three-story and basement houses, The main buildings are 20 feet wide by adepth of 35 fect, and the back buildings are 15 feet wide by 27 feet deep, two stories | and basement in height. The basement con- tains a large kitchen with pantry, store room and closets, and under the front portion of each house there is a large cellar and furnace room, The first floor has rior, library and dining room, with butler’s paniry and china closet. ‘Tie second and third stories are divided off 1m bedrooms with large closets and bath room. ‘The houses are builtof brick, with bay windows theentire height. The fronts are of selected red brick, laid in red mortar and immed with Stone; brick and galvanized iron. The cornices and gables ure also of galvanized iron and brick. The deck roofs are covered with red terra cotta tiling. The interior finish will be of poplar, partly finished in natural woods, and of Stained imitation of hard wood. The cost will about $18,000, Mr. J, Germuiller is the nee aud be architect, and Mr. John Hogan is the contrac- tor. —— CAMP ENDICOTT. ‘The National Rifles Cadets to Camp by the Potomae Side. ‘The National Rifles Cadet Corps will leave the city this evening for the encampment at Colo- nial Beach. The tents to accommodate the warriors when in repose have been erectex m the lett of the hotel. At the times wen the necessities of mibtary regula- tions compel them to eat they will go to the hotel, and the proprietor, Mr. Hickey, is ea- gaged to contribute to their enjoyment and Pi ure. With the exception of this neces- Xary and occasional relapse into the ways of peaceful civilization, the young men will lead the hard and exatting life of soldiers upon the tented field. They intend to break eampon the 18th of Augusi, and during their expect to vary the monotony of rou- lite by various diversions which will make life pleasant. Amoug other things they look forward with pleasure to visits from their friends, On the 13th instant an exet sion from this city will be given under their auspice Each day there will be a dress the Laure! The light rain which commenced falling about 8 o'clock yesterday morning gradually inereased, and, after one o'clock, it poured down in torrents. Consequently, it was deemed best to omit the regular services in the after- noon; not, however, because the campers could not walk to the tabernacle, for, except ina few spots, no water stood on the ground, but the ladice especially did not like to sit in the open tabernacle, ‘The regular prayer or experlence meet held at' o'clock in the morning was conduct by Rev. The water in the branch near the springs overtlowed yesterday, turning the wooden bridges to the springs, a damage which can soon be repaired. Holt, a young man twenty years old, a house painter by trade, hailing from Piscata- way, Md., some three months ago came to this city for work, and while here fell in love with Margaret Gray Warren, who was about forty yearsold, Although bis friends interposed to prevent his marriage to her, they were unsuc- cessful. Holt was wedded to’ her and returned to his paternal home, taxing his wife along with him.
