The principal cause of criticism as it comes through many sources to THE STAR ta the vast difference in the prices charged to the government and what are asked from private consumers. For instance, one department is furnished Ice at twenty-seven cents per hun- dred, while others pay five or six cents more, year, when, through what was alleged to be o combination among the fee dealers, the bjds for all the departments were uniformly 45 or 47 cents, all the bids were rejected, and a new let- ting Was made with the result that @ Balt- more man furnished the ice at thirty- five cents the hundred. This year the Washington deulers received the contracts at the figures above named. While the price rged to. the government for Ice has gone mn from 43 cents to an average of 27 cents citizens complain that they are com: ¥ the same old figures—fifty cents ahundred. ‘hey state that when the government was pay- ing 42 and 45 for ice in large quantities, ‘nts did not seem to be an unreasonable price r small consumers. But now that the price to the government has been so much reduced, it is thought that the citizens ought to have the'ben- efit ot lower prices. Tt is further stated that special terms are made with hotels, restaurants, drug stores, &e., and to those citizens who make complaint, but from the ordinary eitizen who pays his bills and wants to enjoy a quiet life, the old rates are still exacted. ‘The above ts in brief the substance of the com- pisints made verballyand in wriring to THE STAR, and are’given this publicity because as ice paid is amatter of public concern. i LY persons, again, say that they have no objections to paying fifty cents per hundred for Jee, or even more, if they could only get the amount of ice they pay for. They say that the great difficulty is that they pay for fifty pounds, when often they get only twenty-five poun and so this clasé ask THE STAR to say @ Wol in favor of full and fair weight. WHAT THE COMPANIES SAY. In order to ascertain what might be said from the standpoint of the companies, a STAR reporter was sent to interview the representa- tives of the leading companies, and the follow- ing is a condensed statement of what they have to say in regard to these complaints. They say that their bid of forty-two to forty-five cents made last year for farnishing ice to the govern- ment was on account of the uncertainty about the freight rates which they would have to pay for the transportation of the ice to this city. When boats can get freight for the return trip their rates are less. The companies say that the low figures at which ice 1s furnished to some of the departments this year allows only for the delivery of Susquehanna or pound iee—an infe- tior lee, which private consumers would not use, For Maine ice thirty-three and thirty- five cents is paid by the government this year, and this is the quality of fee which is furnished to private cunsumers in this elty. They say bat people who take ten cents worth of ice Want the same rates that are paid by those who take lerge quantities. When the distance to be tra d in making deliveries private houses is dered; and also the waste of ice during transportation, the companies maintain that a wr price is necessary in order to compen- sate them for the additional outlay. ey further say that the people of Washington ice as cheap as they do im Philadelphia, itl ore, and eve orfolk, and that they are nplaint on the part e of the gentlemen company said that as. far as he wa ed he would be pertectly willing toenter into an arrangement with the oth ompantes, So as to give small consumers afalr proportion'of the reduction In price en- ¥ large consumers, but the rate could not be made much lower than that paid at present, PRICES CHARGED THE GOVERNMENT. From inquiry at the various departments of the government and the public offices of the District the following figures are obtained as to What is now actually paid for ice: The contract of the War department for ice 4s with the Great Falls Ice company for 35 cents per 100 pounds. The contract forice for the corridors and laboring force of the State, War and Navy department building is with the Independent company at 25 cents per 100 The Navy department has not yet awarded the ice contract for the present year. Both the Indeendent company and E, M. Willis offered company declined to draw lots for the contract, and it will be awarded to. Willis if the quality Of ice Is satisfactory. The contract for the State department has not yet been made. Tce was furnished last year by the Great Falls company at 45 cents, The Post Office department pays 38 cents per handred pounds, and requires the ice to be the. best Kennev The contract with the Interior department provides for the payment of 27 cents per hun- dred for the best qi y of ice. She contract for furnishing ice to ihe Treasury iment is 23% cents per hundred poun is awarded to Mr. Willis. The ice furnished to the House of Representa. Uves is obtained at the contract price of 25 cents per hundred pounds, The price paid by the District Commisstoners for ice is 50 cents per hundred pcunds, and the Kennebec river ice is the kind consumed. The police sta houses and many other branches ofthe District government where ice i re- quired is furnished by orders of the Commis- sioners. ‘The quantity per season does not ex- ceed fifteen tons.
