THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: FHURSDAY._ _ _.........Suly 23, 18985. _ CROSBY 6. NOYES......... Editor. — — ‘The Evening Star bas & regular, permanent bona Side daily greuiation mee than treble that of agy ether daily paper published in Washingten, and equal to that of all the ether daily papers here added toaether. — = = a every mind to-da; the cent of Gageral Grant, Thy ovent whe not unexpected. In trutt 1s must be regarded as a mercy that his hopeless suffuring is over; and yet the nation’s heart is penetrated with sorrow as It learns that the end has come. ‘This is not the time to nicely walgh the merits of General Grant's character. His name will live as long as the republic, and will grow brighter with age. Time, which deatioys com- mon repatetions, will simply remove from his the imperfections which marred it among his contemporaries, and will give to posterity the portrait ofan ideal and typical American. It is not hazardous to predict that in the distant fature, when greatness is ¢een in its true lines of perspective, Lincoin and Grant will be the two great names in our epoch of American his- tory, and two of the greatest in the history of any people or age. And itis a source of peculiar gratification that in this general estimate the south of the fature will join the north. Even today, that section of the country, which felt tHe frog’ band Of war directed by Grant, not sltiply respects hin at a great master but reveres his memory’ ‘asa just and Kind foe, who, whoh tho Issue was decided, relaxed his sternrtess and treated his enemy as his fellow-citiseri_ No man could enjoy the bigh honors which followed Grant without exctting envy and de- ‘traction. He was flercely eritteléed from the beginning, yet there was acertain quality in his gentus that seemed to lift him above all at tack. In his early carver as a soldier he was denounced as incompetent and yarellable; yet he advanced step by step till he reached the highest round of glory. As 4 politician he was bitterly aesatled; but the people rallied to hts support with # devotion that confounded the ablest critics of his administration. In busi- nese affairs he was singnlarly upfortunate in the choice of friends, but the nation will nat | believe that he ever consented to dealings which would be inconsistent with an upright character. To sum up, briefly, it may be sabi that to Grant more then auy man of the present age may be applied the trite, but expressive words of Shakespeare: “He was s man, take him for all in all, Westlt wot look upon hy ike aga” A census that has just been taken of the Chey- ennes and Arapahoe tribes throws some light on the question of the disappearance of the In- dian. In 1874, when the last count was taken, the Cheyeunes ‘numbered 8,905, and the Ara- pahoes 2,366. They now nuniber 3,169 and 1,300, respectively. If the count embraces in each case the same elements, and in each case ‘was accurate, the figures show that these two tribes, at least, are rapidly fading away. passa as Ac ak ‘The treaty of peace announced between the Pennsylvania and the New York Genteal rail- roads ts one of the most tmportant events of the yearin the business world. For some time these two gteat corporations have been hostile. ‘The Pennsylvania has been aiming to get con- trol of the West Shore railroad, and the Central has retaliated by invading {ts enemy's natural territory and getting hold of the South Penn- sylvania and Beech Creek roads. Thus both companies were doing their best to impair the other's business, although {t might be at the ex- PRense of their own. This is now to be stopped. Each ratiroad Is to be let alone in its own baili- wick, and the two rivals are to conduct their general business In an amicable spirit toward ‘each other. If this agreement {s fnithfully carried out it should assist both ratlroads to get back to a pound business basis, and thereby benefit the business community generally. As a rule, these great railroad combinations are not looked on ‘with mueh favor by outsiders, bat In the pree- entense it was evident that the warfare be- tween the roads was demoralizing to all securi- ties, anda peace will be welcome as a promise ofa more legitimate business and hence of bet- ter times. Thore is one axpect of the situation, however, that does not give entire satisfuotion. The tendency of the combination is to throw | obstacles in the way of the Baltimore and Ohio Fallroad pushing its lines to New York. Such ® policy will not find much sympathy from the | Public, as wholesome competition along the erowded Atlantic seaboard is in the highest de- gree desirable. = It tsgratifying to see that the police are shut- tang down sharply on attempts to circulate vulgar and obscene publications founded on the Pall Mall Gasette’s disclosures. Buch at- tempts were to be expected as soon as it ap- peared that a burning indignation for vice might be made very profitable to the self appointed social censor, but it is the duty of the authorities and of good citizens to see to it ‘that alleged reformers are not permitted to make money by familtarizing society with the most repulsive erimes and vices. —<$—<$<$<— The civil service reformers have preferred charzes against Postmaster Jones, of Indianap- lis, who, it will be remembered, was appointed ‘at the special recommendation of Vice Presi- @ent Hendricks, 11 the facts are as stated by the reformers, Mr. Jones has overstepped the bounds, but in a spectal to the New York World, he denies that he has failed to observe the law or bas any intention to disregard {t. Postmas- ter Jones might become a very interesting is- fue if matters were pushed ton square fight, but it ts not likely that the ease will be allowed tw asaume a controversial shape, ee ee Even a better advertisement for the new opera “the Mikado” than Mr. Sullivan coming ever from Eugland tn the steamer under an assumed name “in order to insure quiet and ivacy,” is the present legal wrangle in New | fork over who has the right to produce there.
