A MERCHANT OF 35 YEARS COMES TO THIS CITY TH A GIRL OF 15—THEIR MAKRIAGE PRE- VENTED BY AN OBDURATE STEPMOTHER OF THE Gree. I was on the Armenia, She left Lower Cedar pint at five o'clock, and reached her wharf in this city a few minutes after nine o'clock, on schedule time, and twenty minutes later than the evening before. I was a close observer of the trip, and if there was any extra effort made by the "Armenia T failed to notice it. There Were many persons in the part of the vessel where I was who were displeased because the nmmanding officer did not put ona little extra steam and pull away from the Arrowsmith, The vessels_ran side by side for some distance, and this led many to suppose that they were racing, and, like a false alarm of fire In a church | or theater, caused great excitement, and some | were frightened. It was the unanimous opinion ofall with whom I conversed that the Arrow smith, being ahead, made xome little effort to keep ahead, but that the Armenia kept on her regular course and with her usual pressure of July 20, 1885. N.C. Martin. [From reliable Information which reaches us from various sources we are satisfied that so far as the Armenia is concerned, at least, there was no effort to attain unusual speed on the occasion referred to, and that those who had fears on the subject entertained them without sufficient cause.—ED.
