RS aka es: D.C, TUESDAY, JULY 7, 1885.: - THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: TUESDAY. uly 7, 1895. ‘The Evening Star has regular, permanent beun fide daily circulation more than treble that of amy other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that of all the _Sther daily papers bere added together. ‘The’ demand for space in the advertising col- umns of THE STAx is very large, and adver- tisers will confer a favor by sending in their orders as early as practicable to insure insertion ‘and classification in to-morrow's double-sheet cote ee A Gov. Hoadly has consented to run again for governor in Obio, and has already begun the preliminary work of the campaign. Mr. For- aker has also entered on the canvass with energy, and speaks hopefully of the prospects. ‘He has an up-bill task, however. Mr. Houdly has already beaten him once, and the same causes which led to that result still exist. A great deal depends this year on the mood of the colored vote. On account of his anti-<slavery record, Gov. Hoadly ts very popular among this element, while Mr. Foraker has incurred its hostility by bis course as a lawyer in matters affecting its social standing. In such a close state as Ohio, a change of ten or fifteen thou- sand votes would probably tip the balance either way. The stake at issue {s really much larger than the election of the state ticket. A legislature is also to be chosen, which will elect the successor ofSenator Sherman. If Gov. Hoadly wins the day for the state ticket it is probable that he will also bring in a democratic majority in the legislature. Ifso,he is booked for the Senate himseif. Hence, the contest has a national sig- nificance, and for that reason will exelte gen- eral attention. $< ‘The revelations which a London newspaper 4s making of the social immorulity of that great center of life are, doubtless, entirely within the truth. London is probably the Wickedest elty in the world; certainly no other elty thrusts such abominable sights of druanken- ness and depravity on the wayfurer. Wicked Paris looks as if it was going to hell; wicked London looks as ifithad got there. But the trouble with the disclosures alluded to, and with all others of the sort, is that they miss the law of proportion. Individual cases. are de- scribed, and we are led to assume that they are ber representative of general practices. The one villain or the special group of villains make us forget the tousands upon thousands ofordinary decent people who make up the bulk of society. Naturally enough, these people feel scandalized by publications that cast @ stigma on society at large. At the same time, there is no weapon so useful in attacking vice of all sorts ax publici Se It does not appear from the eourt dockets that there is any necessity for a specially severe criminal code for Ireland. The summer assizes in the island opened yesterday with only one case likely to result in a verdict of death. There are no agrarian crimes on the calendars, and few eases of any sort. <9 The New York Wor/d’s contribution fund for the Liberty pedestal was not closed, by reach- Aug the $100,000 point, on the 4th of July, as it should have been, but the end cannot be very far off. Saturday closed with $90,893.10 re- ceived, and public interest in the subject still existing, #0 it is safe to assume that the re- mainder will soon be madeup. The World de- serves great credit for its successful efforts In ‘the matter. But for its action there is no tell- ing when or how the required amount would have been raised, as The rich people of Now York, who could easily have contributed all the money needed without feeling It, were sin- gularly apathetic on the subject. Their inditfer- ence was indeed as remarkable as it was dis- creditable. a Commander Gorringe, whose death oceurred yesterday, was a man of original and tertile mind, and courageous and resolute of purpose. He sprang into fame by his success in bringing the Egyptian obelisk to New York, and from that exploit down to his last illness he lived much inthe public eye. Of his many projects, ‘that of establishing a large ship building yard wws the most ambitious, but it proved to be iil- cOnaidered, and its want of success probably hastened his death. —— There has been some vague talk of opposition t» the return of Mr. Edmunds to the Senate, bat his reelection seems to be practically as- sured. The gentiemen who have been numed ‘a8 possible rivals oue and all refuse to take the field against him. The Senator's couse during the presidential campaign, while not pleasing to the party managers, was really not very offensive to Vermont republicans, and has not dimmed bis popularity very much in that state. His devotion to the principles of the re- publican party have never been questioned, ‘and those prinetpies have no abler champion. a ‘One of two things ought to happen. Either ‘Higgins should go, or the papers should let up on Higgins. There is getting to be a little too much of Higgins. He isn’t a national issue. ——————————_ D.
