THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D c., Mt » 4 THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTO: MONDAY......... The ay Sa bona tide daily cireulation more than treble that of amy other daily paper published im Washington, and equal to that of all the _ Other dally papers here added together. euch notice as was taken of the day by the oldest Inhabitants association, the Fourth of July passed by this year without formal ob- servanee, so far as the city of Washington was concerned. The celebration of the event was Practically turned over to the small boy and girl of the period, who made such demonstra- tlous suitable to the occasion as fire crackers and minor pyrotechnic displays would afford, ‘and there was a notable absence of the stars and stripes from the numerous flag staffs Scattered throughout the city. Some of the government buildings even failed to display thelr bunting. Whether these omissions were due to lack of patriotism or a superabundance of oversight, it is difficult to say; but they were anything but creditable to those in authority or otherwise respousible in the premises. If the bation’s birthday is ignored at the national capital, and by the servants of the people, what can be expected of the rest of tue country? ro Toth the Woodstocks, one in Old and the other in New England, are small, countrified places, but both of them have filled a large space in the newspapers for a day or two. The Eng- lish Woodstock has been the scene of the extru- ordinary success of a charming and keen-witted American lady, by whose efforts, mainly, her husband, Lord Randolph Churehili, has been triumphantly returned to parilament. The Connecticut Woodstock has fess romantic ms on attention, but still deserves mention. It was abappy idea of Mr. Bowen to invite to his country home year by year a group of dis- Unguished Americans, to indulge in the tra- Aitional speech-making of the old-fashioned Fourth of July. It has advertised his periodi- cal, to be sure, but it has done much more. It has benefited his nelghoors, and, in this age of the telegraph, bis neighbors are the country at Jorge. The leading speakers at the celebration this year were Seuators Sherman and Logan. And it is not asmall compliment tothe man- ager of the Woodstock meeting that the very fact of his picking upon them as the celebrities of the day Ss regarded as siguificant of their Prominence among the “coming men” of their party. It fs certain that if the republican convention for 1838 were to be held next week Senators Sherman and Logan would be very prominent if not the leading candidates. The two men are opposites, in almost every respect, but either would make agood ran. Sherman might do better in New York than Logan, but we have seen Massachusetts, which hitherto has not been demonstrative over “ Biuck Jack,” exceed herself in warmth of weleome for him. But speculation at this distance is altogether “too previous.” It is a long time yet to 1883, espe- elally in this rapid age. President Cleveland's Fourth of July corres- pondence with Tammany is not calculated to raise the drooping spirits of that organiaation. The President was urged, {na delicate Say something encouraging to “the boys,” bat, Im an equally delicate way, he distinctly Stained from doing so, He wrote the chiefs that the true democratic doctrine with regard to the Offices was to fil them with inen whose fitness would be acknowledged by the whole country. This sounds well; but we are told that the sen- ‘Thuent was received by “the boys” in a solemn Silence. Of course, they would endorse any the- ories of this sort, for platform use only, but an aweful suspicion is creeping over them that the President really means what he PPP Err ‘3 LACES, NECKWEAR, MERS, NOTIONS, COTTON UNDERWEAR, M. WEAR, CORSETS, SHAWLS, AND INFANTS, CHILDREN: —— Fra Diavolo is a rather charming person on the stage, but in real life he is anything but agree- able, as the inhabitants of Laurel, Md., have cause to know. Recently a handsome stranger ‘moved into the town and speedily beeame very Popular, wintling up by captivating the affec- Uous of one of the belies of the place and Tuarrying her. The popular young man was in the habit of disappearing occasionally, but his explanations were satisfactory, and nothing Was thought of it, nor did it exelte comment that these disappearances were colneident with aseries of burglaries, But when the marriage ‘was duly celebrated and the young people were enjoying the honeymoon the bridegroom ex- cused himself again, and this time turned up in the hands of the police, who bad caught him in @ burglary at the house of bis new tather-in- law.
