Some of the Houses Now Being Ereeted— An Encouraging Outlook. ‘The butiding season, judging from the per- mits now being taken out, is drawing to a close, but as ts usually the case the work now on hand will keep builders occupied until the fall, when another building season begins. There has been tactivity in building during the past few months, and besides numerous transactions In real estate, as the court records will show. The transfers of property have been of such a vol- ume as to keep the market active, and it fs fair tw presume that a good proportion of the real estate that has changed bands will be improved by the new owners. The prospects for the fu- ture are regarded as favorable. Mesrs. Fox and Turner have had plans pre- ared bY Mr. T. F. Schneider for two houses, to buliton Lith street, near H northwest. ‘The fronts, which will be of pressed bricks, and trimamied with brown stone, will be 23 ‘feet wide eack, plain but handsome in design, with octagon bay windows and three stories ‘hich, with cellars under the entire building, which will be seventy-three feet deep. The first story hall and rooms will _communteate by wide sliding doors. The interior tinish will be in natural woods, ofl finish. There will be open fireplaces in all the principal rooms, handsome- ly nisbed with tiled hearths, &¢. The cost Will be about $15,000. Mr. T. I. Bradford, of Baltimore, Md., 1s about tocommence the érection of a residence on P Street, near 16th. This house will be four stories high ‘with the_basement. It will be 22 feet mnt by about 70 feet deep, finished in natural woods, hard oll finish. W- Basne is bullding a very handsome residence “on 2d street, between A street and Pennsylvania avenue southeast, at a cost of $7,500. The front is of «rather ange design. The windows are ornamented with cathedral glass, The house is threestories and basement high, with half mansard tiled Tool, and Is 65 feet deep. The Memorial Lutheran church fs about to begin the erection of & brick chapel on 8th street above Koundary street northwest. | It will be 62 by 28 feel in size, with tower and belfry, slate roof, and will be a very pretty little structure. The ‘lecture room fs in the rear of the auditorium and separated from it by glass partition, the sash of which will slide down, throwing the whole into one room. Gill was the first bicyelist to Fide up Boone’s bil, at the Intersection of the Marlboro’ pike and Benning’s road. It is learned, however, that Will H. Benton made the record on this hill in Apri last, although there is a question in the minds of some as to where the hill proper bezins, and as to whether he ascended the entire hill, ' After an incline of Some length, there is a portion of the road which Is nearly level, and the rest of the bill is Very steep for a bieycie, Benton was undoubt- edly the frst to climb the latter portion, and Gill the Hirst to climb both inclines. Both of these gentlemen are star riders. A number of riders have recently made the effort. Jee sat ade The Carpenter Murder Case, DIFFICULTY 1N OBTAINING A JURY—JODGE MAC ARTHUR ON THE SHIRKING OF JURY DUTY BY CITIZENS. The entire day was spent in the Criminal Court yesterday in selecting jurors in the case of Mrs. murder of her husband. Of the talesmen drawn the majority on appearing stated that they had formed opinions trom the newspaper accounts, The conrt said that in this country {t would be Ampossible to obtain Jurors who had not read the papers, but he could not understand why intelligent'men would form such opinions from hewspaper accounts as would disqualify them.
