Judge Thomas Wells Bartley died St his home, corner 13th and L streets, Saturday night at eight o'clock. Judge Bartley was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, in February, 1812, graduated from Jefferson college, Pennsyl- vania, studied law in this city, was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1834, and began practice In the city of Mansfield, Ohio. He advanced ripidly in his profession, and at the same time became prominent in political life as a demo- erat. Ie was eleeted to the state legislature early in life, serving one term in. the house and twoin the senate. “He also held the post of United States district attorney for four years, While Oblo constituted a single district. Dur- Ing his seeond senatorial term he wes elected President of that body, and under the provi- sions of the state leg: ure, as itthen existed, became licutenant governor of the state, and, upon the resignation of Governor Wilson Shan- non, beeame governor of the state. He was succeeded in that office by his father. Under the new Ohio constitution of 1850-51, Gover= nor Bartley was elected to the supreme bench fe and beeame chief justice. Later he formed a partnership with the late ex-Chief Justice Casey, of the Court of Claims. During the later years of his life he labored to establish here an organ of the democracy to which he was devoted, and the embarrassments and failures which he met lened the closing years of his life.
