Generally it is of no importance todoso. But perhaps the article in your Inst Saturday's issue under the caption, “A Lively ‘Scene in Court—Mr. Cook's Charges Against the Sands Jury—Indignation of the Jury,” calls for some consideration and notice. All the essential statements of the article, so far as they relate in any manner to me are incorrect. I did not express any opinion to the Jury concerning its “findings.” I was not in- vited by “a member of the jury” to enter upon the investigation of any matter connected with the trial nor of any declaration made by me. None of the jury even intimated that “my age only saved me from the consequences of my ‘imputations.’ ” T Mope I do not need thestimu- las of an invitation to induce me to eater upon. ap examination which i think should be made, And I have not arrived at a period of life which demands patience or forbearance from any one. Attacks of rufMfanism can always be wisely re— pelled. The facts,so far as I am concerned, Were in substance these: In a conversation with two or three persons after the Jury was dis- chal I stated that I not think t! the “tine poy ll were sy much the result of a thorough and calm consideration of the evidence as of feeling and prejudice unjustly excited in favor of Mr. Sands and against the petitioner, her sis- ter and brother-in-law, and some of the witness- ; and that I believed there had been too much. ‘hob-nobbing” in the interest of Mr. Sands with some of the Jury. One of them who had proached iny desk and quietly, placed himself unnecessarily and mehacingly behind me “spoke up" and said he “wished no reflections on the jury,” to which I responded that I had not been addressing him; that I could not be deterred by his presence or threats from expres- sing my opinion, and that it might be well for him torestrain his indignation until I had time to sustain what I had said By pronee proof. The conversation then ceased, and the matter ter- minated. Time and further pursuit of facts in the Sands case will determine whether my opinion of the “findings” were correct or Incor- rect. Whether the pursuit of facts will create “commotion” is a matter of perfect indifference tome. Justice and truth often produce “com- motion,” perhaps always. Very respectfully, WittraM A.
