THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTO3 April 15, 1885. crosny s. NOYES. The Evening Star has a regular, permanent bona fide daiiy circuiation more than treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that of all the ~Sther daily papers here ndded together- Secretary Lamar puts his foot down firmly in the Oklahoma matter, and declares that until the cuveted land is regularly opened to settle ‘Ment neither those now outside Its limits shall go there, nor those now there shall stay. With ref erence to the first part of his proposition the Secretary may not have much difficulty. Back- ed up by United States troops, it will be com- paratively easy to keep out intending settlers, handicapped as they are with women and chil- dren and the impedimenta of household and farming utensils. But with the eattle kings now on the land the work of dispossession and evac- Ration will be much more difficult. Like all and grabbers, they are rich, influential and un- scrupulous, and have a mysterious knack of having their own way,so far as government and government officials aze concerned. It Is to be hoped they may be less successful with ‘Mr. Lamar and his subordinates than they have been in the past; but the latter may count upon it that they will have a long and sharply con- tested struggle before they cun call the vietory theirs. This, however, is no reason why the fight should not be maintained until the su- premacy of the government is wholly estab- lished. It will not do to keep out the bona fide cultivators of smal! farms and leave the land monopolists practically tn possession, The difficuities In the Soudan and Tonquin are completely overshadowed by the more im- portant news In rezard ty the impending con- flict between England and Russia, In Exypt the British are making a backward movement, and though Gen. Wolseley asserts that he will Tesume operations aguinst Khartoum fn the fall, itis likely that Enziand will quietly draw out of the whole business. Orders for the ee= sation of hostilities have been made by both French and Celestials, and it's not probable that there will be any more fighting in China, —— Every now and then comes the report of an accident which shows the criminal neglect of a builder In the erection of dwe!lings intrusted to his supervision.
