Thompson. RESOLUTIONS OF THE PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACH- ERS. Ata meeting of the public school teachers of the fourth division, March 31st, the following resolutions were unanimously adopted: In the providence of God we are again called to pause before the awful stillness of death. The sharpened axe has been laid to the root, and Ic @ sturdy oak, under whose leafy branches we | have often found welcome shade from the scorching heat of daily toil, bas faHen. Our sad- @ened hearts can scarcely loved friend and for many years the revered counsellor of our school life, has passed away. Yet, in loving submission to an all-wise Cre- ator, we will resign “the dust to the was and the spirit to God who gave it. Kesolved, That by the death of our lifelong friend and ex-prineipal, Mr. John E. Thompson, Weare called to mourn one who was endeared to us by many social and fraternal ties. His Warm sympathetic heart always invited and Won our confidence, ag his experienced, fatherly counsels ever eheered our despondericies and htened our perplexities. Not the least of his Virtues was that delicate tact and tender cour lesy which he always displayed towards those Who sought the benefit of his wisdom and ex- Berience. His knowledge of his vocation was extensive: and ever will we hold in grateful Femembrance bis ever-ready and cheerful wil- ess to dispense the treasures he had gleaned by years of toil and study. His genial, Tesponsive nature awakened a love and ever: ence which will be lasting. And though he lies the cold embrace of mortality, he “yet and will never cease to spéak in the Lives of those whose intellects he has diselp- Mned and influenced. - Retolved, That rh with intense grief we mourn a Vacant place that Will never be filled, alize that the be- | Amasements. On Sunday, April Sth, a new schedule of through trains will be put in operation on the lines of the Pennsylvania Railroad company, in which the system of “rapfd transit,” so long and so thoroughly tested, and so successfully and safely conducted by this great company on the eastern division of the lines, will be ex- tended to the Important through’ service be- tween the Atlantic seaboard and the great cities of the west. The entire train service of the road, east and westbound, between New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Chiedgo, Cincinnati'and St. Louis will be rear: ranged, ‘old trains quickened, and new ones added,’and the time of all through trains re- duced to the lowest possible limit. Nosuch sweeping reduction in running time has ever before been attempted by ang raflroad, and none. has ever succeeded in so ni@rly anni- hiluting the space between two given points, Under the new arrangement the New, York and Chieazo Limited will leave New York at 10 2. m., Philadelphia 12:20 p.m., Washington 10:50 aun. Baltimore 11:60 a.m,, arriving at Chicago 10 a.m. the next morning, making the runni time from New York 24 hours, Philadelphia 2: hours and 40 ininutes, Washington 23 hours and 10 minutes, and Baltimore 32 hours and 10 minutes. Considering the distance covered this is the fastest train in the world. It carries with It every requisite for comfort or luxury that one could enjoy in one’s own house. Its time from Ney York to Cincinnati is 21 hours, and to St. Louls 29 hours, with a corresponding Reduction to other points. Tn addition to the “Limited” a new fast train, the Chicago and Cinciunat! Express, will leave New York at 6 Philadelphia 8:50 p.m., Washington 5, Baltimore 8:25 pan., arriving at Cincin- ati 4:15 p.m, and Ch 8:30 p.m. next his train will make its run to Chi- > in 26 hours and 30 minutes, only two hours and a half more than the time of the New York and Chicago Limited, The Fast Line formerly leaving New York at 8:00 a. m., will leave at 9:00, and about oue hour later than formerly from Philadelphia, Baltt- more and Washington, and will perform its service in much quicker time. The Western Express will also leave an hour later, but is so in a considerable amount of at western points. ‘There can hardly be a question that the time to be made under this new arrangement Is the best that any railroad could accomplish, and in order to sectire this desirable result the mana- gers of the Penusylvania have worked assidu. ously for years. Not only have they equipped their road and their cars with every appliance that modern ingenuity has devised, but the road itself has been brought so nearly to astate of perfection that results almost marvelous In the way of speed and promptness may now be attained. It 1s the triumph of earnest, thor- ough, conscientious and persistent effort. The inauguration of the new schedule will not only mark an era in the history of the great corporation, but will prove a most Important event in the railroad history of the world. ee Deati oF Mr. T.
