aT is THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C Roohas MARCH 17, 1885. WASHINGTON ‘FVESDAY. March 17, 1885. bona fide daily circulation more than treble that of amy other daily President Cleveland hashad hisfirst great fight within the party on a question of patronage, and has survived the ordeal with credit. The don- test over the commissionership of internal reve- Rue was very earnest, and divided the leaders Of the party: but the result will be accepted in good nature because the issue was fairly made ‘and was decided on good grounds. Never did a man have stronger backing than Mr. Thompson; ‘Dut Just there was one objection to him. His backing was altogether too earnest in quarters where the question touched selfish Interests. Had tie whisky trade showed less zeal, they might have succeeded better. The personal ‘futagonisms of the contest were exaggerated by the lovers of gossip; but so far as Individual influence affected the result it must be agreed that the honors Ile with Mr. Randall. President Cleveland has now given a striking Imatance of his independence and will power, and the politicians will not be slow to draw the moral of the incident and govern themselves henceforth accordingly. It would not be sur- prising If from now on Mr. Cleveland had more Jetsure from office-seekers and delegations pre- senting their “claims. a ‘The English watch the acts and words of the Irish leaders carefully, and sleze any ground for censure. Just now they think they have Parnell on the hip. That politician Is especially distasteful to them through his discretion, ‘which heretofore has foiled every effort to en- trap him. But in a recent utterance, bearing on the reception of the Prince of Wales in Ireland, Wey detect treason, and as Patrick Henry would say, they intend to “make the most of 4” Toan outsider it is dificult to see wherein Parnell’s letter is treasonable. It advised the Irish to maintain an attitude of reserve, to make no hostile demonstrations and no expres- sions of welcome, and declared the visit of the Prince was inopportune, so long as the govern- ment was represented in Ireland by “the un- speakably indecent coterie” who were to be his oficial hosts at Dublin Castle. These are bitter and possibly dangerous words, but if they come properly within the statute of treason, so much the worse for the statute. If such wordsare trea- son, Great Britain is not free. Intwo of the three states where new Senators had tobe chosen to fill vacancies created by the transfer of Bayard, Lamar and Garland to the cabinet, the successors have been named, and in both cases the wishes of the retiring Senators have been gratified. General Walt- Ball, who takes Secretary Lamar's,seat In the @enate vy appointment from the governor, is a Warr: personal friend of Mr. Lamar, ‘and Attorney General Gray, of Delaware, who suc ceeds Mr. Bayard, was that gentleman's choice. ‘The result indicates, therefore, that both main- tain their hold on state polities, and will be able, when the time comes, to resume their Iegislative career where they dropped it for ministerial functions. —————— Mr. Watterson is not quite prepared to believe | that the President incans anything in par tieular by the appointment of Miller for com- taiasioner of internal revenue over Phil Thomp- fop, but thinks that the action “is not en- eOuraging to the friends of real revenue yeform.” Mr. Watterson cracks the whip slightly in the direction of the White House by the remark that “if the President allies himself to Mr. Randall, it will involve a hopeless split of the party, and a new array of political forces.” ‘The interview of the temperance women with Miss Cleveland yesterday was an inter- eating event, and will be fully as productive of Practical result as if the visitors had urged their @euse more specifically. There !s every reason Yo believe that the domestic management of the White House, under Miss Cleveland's rule, Will be in accord with the feelings of the best sentiment of the country. $< A fearful revolution has broken out fn the state of Panama, and the city is now invested by the insurgent troops consisting of two hund- fed and fifty men. This overwhelming force is beleaguering the town, and we are told “the Aring is incessant.” If they don’t look out they may hit somebody, and in the interest of peace | ‘the Maryland navy, which seems to bayesub- dued the oyster pirates, ought to be dispatched to the isthmus with orders toshell both camps ‘unless they “kiss and make up.” —____—-- Gen. Grant's illness seems to have taken nother downward turn. The best efforts of the best physicians are unavailing to sustain Bim, and a fatal termination of the disease is apparently inevitable. —<—$<$_—<o——__— Our wheat growers, against whom the French government has put up a tariff-wall, may be avenged by the French people, as the bakers have raised the price of bread, and thelr hot- tempered customers have begun to mob them ee Higgins is raising almost as big a storm as| Wiggins, Mr. Randall seem to be a sort of political Sul- TLL.
