The President and Dr. Charch. Washinzton Special to the Baltimore Sun, There has been considerable gossip about President Cleveland's preferences as to what church he will attend during his residence in Washington, and there have been some unkind cuts at the New York Avenue Presbyterian church (Rey. Dr. Bartlett) because It was sup- posed that extraordinary efforts were being Inace to get him to go there to pray. Inquiry: among leading members of the chureh develops the fact that the intimation that Dr, Bartlett has been engaged in efforts to build up an aris- tocratic congregation on the strength of Presi- dent Cieveland’s possible acceptance of a pew is not at all well founded. When Dr. Bartlett en- tered upon the pastorate every pew in the body of the church was occupied, and there has not been a day in vears when a sitting could be had for money, unless by accident. It is not likely the President can obtain a pew there until some portion of the congregation, shall have Inigrated to the next colony of this popular chureh, or some special arrangement {fs made for his accommodation. In point of fact, all the pews in the church have been rented since 1861, when Rev. Dr. Gurley was pastor. After his death, under the pastorate of Kev. Dr. J. R. Pax- ton, now of New York city, t was found neces. sury, by reason of the steady growth, to erect alleries in the chureh, and the pews furnished : this improvement Were rapidly taken after Rev. Dr, Bartlett, the present pastor gave evi- dence of his talent in his pulpit ministrations. ‘The unkind reports doubtless originated from the fact that there is a warm. personal friend- ship between Dr. Bartlett and Rey. Mr. Cleve- land, the President's brother. In this matter, as In most other things, it is believed that Presi- dent Cleveland will consult his own preferences and conventence: ———— England and Russia.
