VASHIN SATURDAY CROSBY 8. NOYES. y other daily paper Washington, and equal to that of all the other daily papers here added together. Mr. Cleveland's silver letter is plain, bold and strong. It is one that a politician would not have written, but may be the more popular with the country on that account. The disin- clination of the silver men to have St published explained, now that {t has appeare it cannot fail to influence public opinion against | their favorite idea, and should financial trouble visit the country during the recess they would be held to a severe responsibility, Insuch a crisis, as Mr. Cleveland warns them, the chief sufferers will be the poor and the laboring classes, and to them those who precipitate the rouble must give account. One feature in the letter will be peculiarly objectionable to the strict partisan, namel Mr. Cleveland’s open and candid endorsement of the views of the republican administrations on this question. The history of this episode fs a fresh illustra. tion that in Mr. Cleveland the country w have a President of positive ideas and de} minatidn of purpose. That he has not been cowed by the “rebuke” in the House appears from the fact that when Mr. Warner tele- graphed for permission to publish the letter he promptly gave it, and when, upon consultation, the silver men decided not to publish it after all, he immediately gave it out at Albany himself. Sa ee We are notified that there will be again Little or no debt reduction for the month, and the explanation is not entirely ingenuous. We are told it is by reason of large payments, but the real cause is known by all who read the first line !p the news columns of each day's issue of THE Stan. It ts the falling offin gov- ernment receipts rather than special and extra- ordinary disbursements that accounts for the smail balance from month to month in favor of the Treasury. The government is feeling the PPevailing duiness in trade which afflicts bus ness men generally. If people buy less im- ported goods, there is, of course, a falling off In customs, and if they economize in luxuries of home production, the effect appears in smaller returns tothe internal revenue bureau, Then the recent tariff revision, while not so radical as some feared and others hoped, has cut down the Treasury receipts appreciably; so that from one cause and andther there is much less mo: coming into the Treasury while the expendl- tures remain about the same. —<—<—$ $< Although there has been no formal announce Ment of the Clev d cabinet, and probably Will be none till the list is sent to the Senate, its composition is pretty well known. But one or two places remain u ned, and the choice of men for these has narrowed down toa few names. There may be surprises in store for the | public, but the probability is that the cabinet will be substantialy as commonly understood } at this time. It will be generally acknowledged that the advisers selected are distinguished and repre sentative men. Mr. Cleveland may be criticised for the favor he has shown the Atlantic sea- board, but those who find fault with him for this must have short memories if they have already forgotten the great stress laid on the } importance of winning the support of that sec tion of the country during the campaign. It | Would be unreasonable for the east to give the | Votes, and the west to dictate the policy. —<—<$<—<$<$<$<—<<— | Assets. Gladstone found his Ezyptian policy sus. tained on atest vote last nicht by the narrow majority of fourteen {na house of six hundred | members. And, moreover, the vote was not so | much an endorsement of bis policy asa mark | of personal sympathy and respect. Meanwhile | the British army ts succeeding in getting safely | back to {ts base of supplies, which is not a very glorious outcome of the first campaign, to be sure, but nevertheless, under the circumstances @ matter for rejoicing. —<$$< The reports about Grant's condition are get- ting to be as conflicting as were those which purported to describe the progress of Garfield's illness. Itis tobe hoped that the darker view will not now, as then, prove tobe the correct one. Hivcerznerry Fis HUCKLEBERRY FINN, HUCKLEBERRY FINN. MARK TWALN’S NEW BOOK.
