Avvery sucopssful test of the Harden Star hand grenade fire extinguisher was made by Mr. R. H. Rose, the general agent at the Capitol, today. The architect of the Capitol, Mr. Clark, has been testing the various fire extinguishers, in compliance with the resolution of the House after the fire which occurred in the file room 8. few weeks ago. Tests of three or four different extinguishers which have been made ere pro- jounced by Mr. Clark to have been unsatisfao- Tory. “in the tset of the Harding Grenade, to- ay considerable interest was taken, and crowd of about a hundred people were present, including the architect of the Capitol and the chief clerk of the House. A frame-work, twelve feet high and eight feet wide, Tepresent one side of a bull , filled with pitch pine, shavings and other very combusti- le material, and completely soaked with Pitch-tar, was erected on the terrace, just west ‘ofthe Capitol, and set on fire, An’ Immense blazerose instantly above the trees and made such a crackling and Sper! that it threatened toget beyond control. | After letting it burn until the whole structure was well caught, and the heat was atits highest, Mr. Rose gave the ordet, and two little grenades, each holding about a pint of liquid, were thrown into the fire and in an instant {t was under control, 80 that Mr. Rose could walk right into it, and afew more grenades converted the whole'to.a heap of dead blackened rubbish with no fire in it. The streams of burning pitch were extinguished Segoon as the grenades bureted: | iS r. Clark, the arel © was vor well satisfied with the test, and the Marden hand grenade was the best thing af the kind he had seen. Tests made upon od letters and books for the purpose of seeing if the fluid would injure records more than water would have proven as successful. The ketene on let- ters saturated with the fluid is not affected in the least, the ink not being even blurred, as water will sfonerally do, The exhibition was in every way a perfect success, and it is believed, after seeing the test, that it would be impossible for a fire to get be- yond control with the grenades at hand. The grenade is merely a little pot-bellied blue bottle, containing abouta pint of fluid, which is thrown at the fire like a ball, and, bursting, forms a gas which extinguishes the Hames in- stantly, ———— ‘The Grand and Petit Jurors.
