Governor Abbett, of New Jersey, has re- ceived a letter from Secretary Chandler ing the record of Charles Tons Sing, the China- man receatly convicted in Newark for felonious assault and robbery. Patten, tne widow of a wealthy Califor nian, will erect a very handsome and commodious residence on the ground which she has recéntly Purchased at the intersection of Q street, 224 ‘street and Massachusetts avenue, for $60,000. The house will be directly opposite Judge Hillyer'’s, and will occupy five thousand feet of ground, which ‘Will be about the center of the property, thus ving ample lawns on both sides, there bet fest front on the east and 100 feet on the westside, ‘The property has a frontage of 217 feet on 22d street, 160 feet on Q street, and 209 on Massachu- setts avenue, with alleys on both the east and the south sides. The plans have been drawn by Mr. Robert L Fleming, architect and builder, and the construction will be at once begun by that gentle- man. ‘Tie style of architecture will be composite of modern di the exterior being constructed of select pr brick with brown stone trimmings, It will have a frontage of fifty-two feet four inches, with a depth of sixty-two feet, and a back building of two stories and a basement twenty-six feet deep and thirty feet wide. ‘The base of the house to the top of the water table will be ashler faced with brown stone, with continuous monided and strin; courses of the same. The cornices will be of bri atid galvanized iron, and the mansard root sur- mounting the three stories will be covered with dark sl:te ald broken with handsome gables and dormer windows. The main entrance for carriages ‘will be from Q street, through’a handsome porte cochere, surmounted by a stone balcony. The en- trance Hall will be 12 feet wide, and will open into alarge hall, from which the’ statrease leads into the 'pper stories. ‘The hall will be walnscoted in cherry, with paneled ceiling, and it will contain a handsomely carved mant Iplece, with tiled fire- place and hearth, ‘The stairease will. be of cherry, and will be a fine specimen of wood-work, and will run to the top of the house. On the left of the hall there willbe a dravring-room, finished In| mano any, With frescoed walls and ceilings. ‘There will be ah entrance to this room also from the vestibule of the second doorway, which will be on the east side of the house, On the right of the main en- trance will be a large salon parlor 18 feet wide and 43 feet long, and back of and communicating by sliding doors will be the library, and opening out of the latter will be a large conservatory. The salon will be finished in white pine painted in buff and gold, the walls and ceilings being highly deco- tated. On the west side there will be a bay win- dow, in which there will be a large open fireplace, with windows and seats on each side. The mantelpiece wil be very heavy and will be supported by double columns with hood over. ‘The entrance to the bay window will be broken by handsome Corinthian columns Supporting molded entablatine. The house will be heated by steam, and will be provided with every conventrnce known to modern architecture. The cost named in the buildin, rmit 1s $70,000, but 1t 4s estimated that more will be expended.
