al aT, THE EVENING STAR: THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: -January 16. 1833. FRIDAY... CROSBY § NOYES............... Editor. ‘The Evening Star bas a regular. permanent Bena fide daily cireutanen more trevie that of anv other dalty paper published Washington. and equal te thai of all ether duily pupers bere added together. . ‘The Doubdle-Sheet To-morrow. Advertisers will coufer a favor by sending in their ‘advertisements for to-morrow’s eight paye paper at as carly an hour 25 practicable, in order to in- sure Insertion and classifcation. —_— ‘The failure ot the McPherson bank bill in the House yesterday was partly due to the fact that ‘the friends of the national banks are not agreed as tothe best method of protecting that interest. Several of the most prominent upholiers of Danks, led by Mr. Pocte aimed that the Mc- Pherson bill was inadequate to meet the needs of ‘the time, as its provisions would not induce the Dapks'to buy the 434 and 4 per cent time bonds or Prevent the calling in of the 3 percents. The Mc- ‘Pherson bili permitted the banks to increase their @trewlation ten per cept on their bonds, but did not touch the fundamental aiffculty which relates to ‘the bonds themselves. ‘To meet this more radical troudie the Potter bill, ‘which 1t was proposed to substitute, provided for a 9% per cent bond to be exchanged at equitable Fates for those now held by the banks, the new ‘Dends to run till the limit of time preseribed for ‘those whose place they took. Mr. Potwer explains ‘that owing to sharp practice on the part of the op- ponents of the national bank system aad to the un- ‘Willingness of the friends of the McPherson Dill to ‘Consent to suitable modification of that measure, tt ‘Was trapossible to consider this substitute, and ‘that, in his opinion, the onus of preventing any Femedial legislation at this session rests on the Miendsof the McPherson bill. These gentlemen ‘Will no doubt retort that it was the pertinacity of ‘the Potter men which did the mischief, while the ‘snthbdank men will not be ¥ ing to admit that ‘Weir own objections were of ess consequence than ‘the divisions among thetr common enemy. But, whatever the cause, tt is plain that this Con- gress will do nothing to help the nationa! banks, ortochange in any respect the fnanctal policy of the government. The banks must get slong a3 wellasthey can,and the Treasury must do the same respecting silver. ‘The Oliver failure at Pittsburg will send a cold shiver down the spine of Pennsylvania tron Workers, and 1% may have a depressing influence generally. The firm was the largestfin the trade, and employed four thousand hands T deciare ‘What they are solvent, and the statement 1s en- dorsed by outside parties, s0 that their embarrass ment may be only temporary. The caus? of their downfall is ascribed to the bad state of the iron trade, which, according to an interview with Andrew Carnegie, “could not be worse.” This declaration ts sugcestive. Of all the ‘Dusiness interests of the country the most carefully protected has been tron. Even in the recent tariff- Feduction movement the iron men were treated very gently, Mr. Harry W. Oliver, the head of the firm now in diftcuity, being a member of the tariff commission, and tie legisiation shaped to suit his Views. If all this care has simply ied to bank- Fuptcy and prostration, it may be time to try the other tack. But the real danger te Pennsylvania fron Hes Bearer home probably than across the water. The 2qpstitution guarantees free trade among the ‘states, and it ts from the south rather than Europe Wat the great menace now comes. It is claimed ‘that tron can be mined at the south as cheaply as it ¢an begotten out of the ground in Engiand and ‘transported to this country; and if this prove to be true and tee supply be found adequate to the demands of the market, all the carefully-framed tariffs fall to the ground. ——_$<$§_<eo—___ ‘Mr. Moody's visit to this city, after an interval of many years, will be an event of great interest to a large part of the community. There ts a strong Gemand for tickets of admission to the exercises, and some discontent is expressed that tickets are | Feguired at all With regard to that matter two explanations are given; first, the inadequate hall ‘accommodations, and second, and chiefly, the na- ‘ture of the work to be accomplished. Mr. Moody’s object tm his present visit ts not to appeal to those outside the churches, but to educate members of the church and inspire them to more earnest and fuveliigent work. The meetings are called a con- ‘Venton, and, being held for the purpose stated, it ts destrabie that the members of the city churches 4m sympathy with the movement should be fur- nished accommodations. The !ntent is to give all ‘Such persons a chance to attend at least one meet- ing. and the tickets are distributed among the churches on that basis, Provably during Mr. Moody's stay there will be one or more ot ‘an evangelistic character open to the general public. ——_—__es ‘the parable of the man with one talent who negiected bis opportunities by putting it into the ground does not apply to the real estat: businesa. Oa the contrary, the surest investment, especially ‘4m times of hazar@ and depression, is ta productive Property of this class. With government securi- ‘tes paying only three per cent, and bonds and ‘Stocks of all sorts realizing Uttie more return, and Subject to dangerous fluctuations, it is not sur- prising that real estate, which pays six, eight and ‘Yen per cent., as ts uniformly the case in this city, ‘sbould maintain its rates. This explains why ‘there ig s0 much inquiry for this class of tavest- iment. ——___.,, ‘Senator Warner Miller, who has come out. strongly for Evarta, pute stress on the fact that that gen- Ueman could be especially userul just now in the ‘Senate, m view of the important questions of for- @igm policy which confront us. The sugges ‘Won ts Umely. Mr. Evarts, while Secretary of State for four years, acquired a practical Tamillarity with @ar diplomatic relations which at this Juneture ‘Would prove of the greatest service in our national council. ‘The latest news from Albany fs to the effect that ‘this and other cousiderations are baring weight | among the members of the legislature, and that ‘2Mr. Evarts has now rather the lead in the race. —_—__<e2—___— Senator Don Cameron comes back to ‘the Senate without any opposition worth speaking of. “Mug- ‘Wump” may signify “leader” or “clef” in Choe- ‘Gaw, Dut It can’t be said to have any such meanigg @ Pennsylvania Dutch. — ‘The old huiks must try to keep afloat a year Jonger, 2s Mr. Randal! thinks {t would be better to get the beneft of Mr. Cieveland’s views on ship- Duilding before taking any further steps in reor- ganizing the navy.
