He declares that when rescued Greely was the weak- est physically, but the strongest mentally of all ‘the party. It is Commodore Schley’s opinion that none of the party would have survived forty-cight hours more of exposure. Sergeant Long, the food- seeker of the Greely survivors, was the only one strong enough to walk from the tent to the beach. ‘Commander Schley does not discuss the question of cannibalism, but says: “In preparing the bodies of the dead for transportation. in alcohol to St. John it was found that six of them—Lieut. When ‘the bodies of the dead were exposed in pre- paring them the Identification was found to be complete. Some of them could be recognized by the aid of a picture taken with us from home. Others, whose features had decayed, were Ident: fied by other characterises, Iain, therefore, sat Jsfied that no mistake was made in this important matter, which 90 impressed us from the begin- ning.” In describing the wretched camp of the survivors Gotnmo sore Schley says: “1 hope never agata In 1ny | Itfe to look upon such Wretchedness and such desti tution. ‘The picture was more starting and more deeply pathetic ‘than I had ever dreamegl could be possible.
