THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: permanent bona See daily cireulation more than treble that ef any other daily paper published is Washington, and equal to that of all the other dally papers here added together. ‘Tem Sram cannot undertake to retam or return rejected articles. Contributors should make copies of any matter sent to newspapers they wish to pregerve, In the mixed state of the political situation at present it 18 very difficult to make any calculations as to the status of the two parties in the next House of Representatives. With regard to the Senate it 1s much easter to estimate the probabill- ies. The Senate now stands 38 republicans, 36 Gemocrats, and 2 readjusters—Mahone and Riddle- berger. AS the Virginia readjuster party has now formeliy adopted the name and principles of the Yepublican party, Messrs Mahone and Riddleberg- er may fairly be classed as repubitcans, giving that Party #9 members of the Senate, or a majority of four. On the &d of next March the terms of twen- ty-six sitting Senators will expire—fourteen demo- rats and eleven republicans. Four democrats have Already been clected as successors for retiring Senators of that party—Blackburn, Eustis, Wilson and Payne, in place of Williams, Jones, Groome and Pendieton—and one republican has been elect- €d to succeed Slater, democrat, of Oregon. 80 that the repubileans have already made a gain of one, and should each party retain the seats it now holds Dy electing successors to its retiring members, the ext Senate would stand 41 republicans to 35 dem- crate. Of the retiring Senators, whose successors have not been elected, it 1s quite certain that seven Will give way to democrats, viz: Alabama, Arkan- sas, Florida, Georgia, Missourt, North Carolina and South Carolina. These, with the four already chosen, make the democrats quite sure of eleven of the fourteen places they must vacate. One seat ‘they have already lost, and the two doubtful ones are California and Indiana, now held by Farley and ‘Voorhees respectively. Of the 11 seats tobe vacated by republicans it ts sate to estimate that Colorado, Jowa, Kansas, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and ‘Vermont, six states, will return republicans. Wis- conain, perhapz, may be classed likewise, leaving, Of the coming Senatorial vacancies on the republi- can side, Connecticut, Tltnots, Nevada and New York in doubt. These, with Indiana and Califor- ia, make six states in which the battle for control Of the next Senate must be fought. Of these the democrats must carry four to bring their force up 10.3%, a bare majority of the Senate, while the re- Dublicans are required only to carry two to main- ‘tain their control. ‘The democratic majority in the present House 1s @, and the indications are that ft will be nearly as dificult for the republicans to overcome that as for the democrats to reverse their control of the Senate. In order to get a bare majority the re- Publicans must capture $4 districts now held by @emocrats. They have made a gain of some in Ohio and expect to get additional districts in Indiana, to regain one or two districts in Iowa, several in Michigan, half a dozen in New York, and several in Wisconsin. The republican victory im Ohio will naturally aid the party in its Con- gressional ght. ———_<e+—___ ‘The efforts to unite the New York city demoo- Yacy on a muniefpal ticket have thus far proved fruitless, and it ts daily growing more doubtful if = fusion can be had. Tammany holds to her own Ucket, headed by Alderman Grant, and the county democracy and Irving hall insist on Mayor Grace. If the split ts beyond mending the republicans have @ good chance tostep inbetween and win. The Gemocrats can cast about 140,000 votes in the city, and the republicans 85,000. If the democratic vote 4s divided at all equally, therefore, the republicans could elect their man. In the last presidential election they came near doing so against @ united Cemocracy, a8 Mayor Grace only recetved 101,760 ‘Votes agalust 98,715 for William Dowd, the repub- Lucan candidate. It is quite possible, therefore, in ‘the event of a three cornered contest that Tam- any might loss both the presidency and the local ‘Ucket, and thus be left out in the cold entirely. ‘The Cleveland democrats are making use of this argument to bring the suchems to terms, but thus far without avail. ——_<e+ ____ ,_ A feature of Mr. Biaine’s trip in Indiana is the Mnterest which the ladies are showing in his for- tunes. The women seem as enthusiistic as the Tuen, The local beauties welcome him in the name of the galaxy of states, and Amazonian phalanxes jugment the processions in his honor. It is even Yeported that the freedom of the suffrage is dan- { Serously restricted in some localities by zealous young ladies who compel thelr democratic suitors | to cuocse between loyalty to Cleveland and to them. } In the {ndianapoits parade quite a number of de- j Jected maies were pointed out who were meekly marching in a republican campaign club as the * price of their sweethearts’ favor ——_—_—_<es——__. ‘The New York Times informs an interested coun- ‘ry that the reports which for some ume have allied ‘President arthur with Miss Tillie Frelinghuysen are true. The match fs made, and there will be a ‘Wedding in the White House. The contracting Parties will have the congratulations of the country. The ceremony will of course be “the” focial event of the winter. Only one President, Jobn Tyler, was ever married while in office, and ‘the ceremony in his case was performed in New ‘York city. —_—_<+—____ ‘The French ate proud of their Latin descent, and now, like their ancestors, they are talking of lay- ing @ tax on bachelors From being stationary, ‘the native population is tow slowly diminishing, the Geaths exceeding the births This state of things 4 not satisfactory, especially as the Germans keep om increasing: so that it 1s proposed to make cell- acy a costly luxury. This tsone way to meet an admitted evil; another would be to tax out of easy Teach those fashions, vices and conveniences which end to keep men singie. Cotton mills in Fall River are shutting down because they cannot market their productions at the cost of manufacture even.
