IRISH VOTING THE REPUBLICAN TICKET. GREAT INTEREST AT COLUMBUS, A Large Vote Reported with Repub! can Gains — ‘The Democrats Voting Early — Doubts About the German Vote. Special Dispatch to Tar Evexrxo Stan. Couusacs, Onro, October 14.—The day 1s aclear, erisp October day throughout the state. Voters walked to the polis this morning over a white frost. ‘There is a very general suspension of business here and elsewhere in the largercities, ‘The law closing all saloons and bar-rooms 1s rigidly enforced. Everything in fact ts given up to the election. An old voier in Columbus says he has not seen so much interest and excitement since the campaign of °40. ‘Voters vote and talk as if they were casting a pres- {dential vote. ‘They were in line this morning long before six o'clock, when the polls opened. The democratic committee tssued instructions last ‘week to have the democratic vote throughout the state polled as early as possible in order that the rest or the day might be given to bringing up stragglers, looking after indiffer- ent men and attending generally to the details of the election. As there is no registration of voters in Ohio this becomes an important work in both parties. Another singular feature 1s the choosing of the Judges of evection by the voters who are first at the polis If the precinct was republican at the last election, then two republican and one demo- cratic Judges are chosen, and if democratic, then the reverse ts the case, In the county canvass democrats now contro! 54 of the 8 counties, and the republicaus admit that this 1s against them. ‘They say they remember the time when they eap- tured the telegram from Wood county to the demo- cratic committee asking if they wanted another thousand from Wood. Both sides are looking after every vote. Late last night word was brought to the republican committee that a man named Harpster, who owns 7,000 sheep some miles distant, had decided to vote the democratic Ucket. It was feared that he would influ%bce others todo so. A committee Was therefore at once d'spatched to see him. They labored with him tll nearly daylight, and then came away In doubt as to how the old man Would vote. He isover 70 years of age. Up to one o'clock this afcernoon a very large vote has been polled in Columbus, and there have been some republican gains. The county republican committee estimate x gain of over three hundred in this city alone. There were several instances where voters who voted for Hoadly last year voted the republican ticket to-day. Suill, there is being largely polled what they call herea “vest pocket vote.” That means that the voter has got his bal- Jot before he comes to the polls and only takes tt out of his vest pocket at the moment he deposits it 4n the box 30 no one can tell really how he votes. ‘The Germans seem to have a good many pockets in thelr vests to-day, for it is diMcult to find how they are generally voting, at least, up to this time. ‘There 48 a food of dispatches here this p. m. from all parts of the state, ‘They all agree that a very large vote has been polled before noon. In fact, here in Columbus, there 1s little or nothing doing at the polis at one o'clock, so unceasingly had been the voting for the previous seven hours. The dis- patches, except from Cleveland, indicate quite de- elded republican gains as compared with the vote of last year, when the democrats elected their gov- ernor. In Toledo the vote of elght precincts were informally counted, and showed republican gains of 105. Hurd, for Congress, running behind his ticket. In Mussillon republican gains are conceded by the democrats, In Dayton the repubitcans are claiming a big gain, amounting (+800, incinding the county. In MeKinley’s district telezrams say he 13 not belng scratched as rauch 2s was anticipated, and his re-election to Congress is confidently pre- dicted. GWA.
