The state of Ohio has long been noted for the great Interest its citizens take in politics, but there has never been a time, so say tae oldest inhabl- tants, when party feeling ran as high as now. Both the olf parties are putting forth the most desperate efforts to win, and the prohtbitiontsts are showing activity algo, though, as the canvass pro- ceeds, neither they nor the “people's party” are making as much of a disturbance as eariler in the fight As the crisis draws near, and the issue 13 geen to be doubtful, the voters tend to return to thetr accustomed party lines and defer “reform” ‘and “a conscience vote” til next year. ‘The democ-ats cannot complain that Mr. Blaine 4s not waging his promised “aggressive campaign.” His white plume is tn the thickest of the fight, and {i seems to awaken a fury of enthusiasm wherever it appears. He 1s attended by the best fighting ‘talent in the republican army: and the combina- tion !s a formidable one. The democrats, on thetr part, have forgotten their differences, and are Mghting their hardpst. They now realize their mistake tn claiming the state, but they hope, never- theless, to carry ft, while they “cast an anchor to windward” by asserting that a republican majority Of from 10,000 to 13,000 1s proable; and therefore, of course, of Ro consequence. ————n Candidate St. John’s jeter of acceptance, pud- Ushed to-day, contributes a fresh element of fn- ‘terest to the now exciting canvass He takes the Ground that the “war issues” are obsolete, and that the “protection” needed by the people 18 not B AUM'S M AMMOTH E STABLISHMENT, 46 7TH STREET NORTHWEST. That visit @f Mr. Mahone to Philadelphia did not Jead, ap- parently, to complete harmony. ——__<+o—————— In the uncertainty that reigns tm politics it 18 comforting to know that the base ball struggles for the year are practically over. A few games Bave stil! to be played, but they will serve only as oMefal returns, so to speak, to fix the exact majori- ‘Wes and make up the final record. This year there have been three associations. In the “ League,” the Providence team has won the pennant from the Boston club, its present guardian. In the “National” association, the Metropolitan club of ‘New York have now a winning lead. In the new “Union” association the St. Louis club is far ahead. Popular interest in the “national game” fs, tf any- ‘thing, on the increase, and playing has almost Feached perfection. ———_+e-_____ John McCullough, the tragedian, Bas finally Droken down completely, cancelled all his en- gagements and retired from the stage. For years bis health has been failing, and bis more recent afforts to act 1a spite of his increasing infirmities have saddened and shocked his real admirers. Mc- Cullough had a giant's frame and an tron constivu- tion, but he breaks down in what should be the Prime of life, 28 a result of “over-doing.” ——___<os—___ ‘The cholera subsided in Naples only to Durst out in great virulence in Genoa, another populous and ‘Girty Italian city, where the disease will find con- genial soi. The situation, as autumn proceeds, 18 not altogether reassuring for a healthy season next year. The disease has evidently a firm hold on southern Europe, and, as the winter's cleansing force ts staall in those, miid latitudes, it is not at all improbable that the scourge “has come to stay.” In Japan, whose climate much resembles ‘thas of Italy, cholera, from being a frequent vist- tor, bas become endemic, and it may prove to be ‘30 along the Mediterranean coasts of Europe. ——__—_e-o--—___ ‘The astonishing report comes from St. Paul, ‘Minz., the center of the buffalo trade, that the en- Ure “catch” of buffalo robes this season ts only four. Lest year it was ten thousand, and in 1881 it was one hundred thousand. The last named figures explain the first. She said that among the chief sinners in these respects were Irving and Miss Ellen Terry. ‘The recent illness of ‘Miss Terry, she declared, was largely fictitious, Straw was strewn in front of her house to deaden ‘the nolse of trac while she was feasting with her friends inside. It may be that fraud of thiszort ‘Will overreach itself.
