From Washington to Chautauqua. ‘4 SLOW TRIP—a missING TRUXE—SoME OF THR AT- ‘TRACTIONS OF CHAUTAUQUA. Correspondence of Tax EvExrre Stan: Cuavravgva, N. ¥., August 6, 1884. Chautauqua is a delightful place, when you get here, but ob! the getting here. ‘The Journey from Washington to Williamsport was very pleasantly ‘Spent in a sleeper, but from Willlamapert te Corry ‘there is only one train per day, and ef course that must needs be an accommodation train. This makes on an average ten stops in each half hour. Avone station, after the regular step, the train Started and we breathed a sigh of relief, thinking, Well, we are off for another three minutes, when “ala! vain hope,” the traia stopped, Dacked and stopped again. ‘on inquiry ‘we ascertained that Some one Rad boarded the train and had forgotten two check bis be ‘unUl the train was in mouen, whereupon he aj the conductor with thé result before stated. —Waen that matter was ar Tanged salisfactorily we continued our journey. THROUGH THE OIL COUNTRY. ‘Yet there are many things to Interest ene on the Journey if he be not too tired to enjoy them. The country is very wild and picturesque, the road run- ning through the lumbering and oll regionsof Penn- sylvania. Ol derricks dot the valleys and hilisides ‘and are even on the summits of the mountains. I Heard the remark to-day that if an oli man thought there were oll in the moom he would raise bis Ticks there and bore for it. TRONKLESS AT CHAUTAUQUA. Well, after having our tickets punched ten times ‘nd other such trials and tribulations, we reached Chautauqua, the haven of our hopes, and !t bids falr.to come up to and surpass our expectations; but even here we are not without annoyances, for we are trunkless Our trunk evidently got tired of such slow and got off at some Junction te Seck another and faster route; but where It 1s I know not. The ladies are very kind and suj tle present uinera shawh a nall-brush, «Coin all Druah and various other articles ‘The people here are very independent, it being & sort Of go-as-you-please, and when the ‘Chautau- qua bells pealed out for tiie eleventh opening of te assembly, We joined the hurrying throng pressing foward the ainpnitheater, a8 gay and happy as anyone, nowwithstanding We had no trunk and only one dress. SOME OF THR EXERCISES. ‘The opening 1s the gala time at Chautauqua, In the auditorium of the amphitheater was an au- dience of several thousands. On the stage were seated the great minds of the country, and in the cholr gallery a chorus of wo hundred. 'At 7:30 w: held the saine vesper service that has been iield al every preceding opening, consisting of responsive readings and uymus. ACS Ube anniversary exer- cises began, which consisted of flye-minuye speeches, Tecitatlos’ani music. Each speaker was 1n bis happlest mood, and each vied with the other In the bruitancy of his remarss. ‘The singers were in te Dest of Volce, and “All went merry as a marriage ei ‘THE CHAUTAUQUA SALUTE. Some of the speakers were houored with the Chautauqua salute, or the “blooming‘of the lies,” as Pansy poetically expresses it. At the signal from Dr. Vincent, the founder of Chautauqua, each and every one of that vast asse ublage waved his white handkerchief, and the effect was not only striking, but beautiful. ‘After ‘the exercises in the amphitheater were over the crowd surged towards the lake, wirich locked like a scene in fairyland. ‘The steamers seemed studded with gems, belng flluminated with different colored lights; the pleasure boats, bril- Muntly filumuated, piled here and were, whlle on the pier there were lights of many hues.” The set Pleces were magnificent, and at the end was sent Up a trl-colored bulloon, which shed a shower of Hire, much to the delight’of the gazers on land, but to the discomfort and disgust of (uose on the water, as It took its course diveetly over their heads. ‘Among the imulutudinous advantages to be en- Joyed at Chautauqua ate the cheap excurstons 10 ‘Niagara Falls.” One can spend nine nours at the falls, visit all the piaces of Interest, have a carriage allday and return the sacse night; all for somo- thing less thaa five dollars On the register of tue Birch cottage I notice the ames of the following Washingtoulans: Mrs, Sheldon, the Misses Ciara Morell, Virginia Micuell, | Clara Ball and Mr. Harry Coolidge.
