His father was a hardware merchant. He learned the trade of a printer in Philadelphia, and came to thisclty as a Journeyman printer when, about twenty-five years of age. He worked a few years on the old National Iatelligencer, and was one of the first eompositors on THE Stan. He was afflicted with obesity, and on account of his great weight of 438 pounds, suffered so much discomfort in Working at the case that he accepted a position in the Pension office, which he held for a number of years. During the war he was a clerk tn the City Post office. Subsequently he embarked in the wood and coal business, investing about all the means he had accumulated, but the venture was unfortunate and he lost nearly all his savings. A little over two years ago he again entered the Pension offlee, and was employed at his desk until the first of July. For several years past he had been sick at times, but about July first he took to his bed for the last time. Mr. ‘Dawson was, for many years, the ding basso of the District, singing with W. J. ler and J. W. Albey, deceased, and Messrs, t. Ball, 8. V. Noyes, J. F. Hodgson, J. H. Daniel and others as the Washincton Uterpeans and the Washington Quartette and Quintette, which 01 Yations often gave concerts here and laces. Mr. Dawsonnever married.
