Notwithstanding all that has been stated in the Papers about filthy and unwholesome places in and about Washington, some of the worst nuisances re- Tain undescribed, One of these is the sewer which discharges the sewage from the Bureau of Engrav- tng and Printing building into the river in the nelghborhood of the Sycamore, or what used to be known as the sycamore beach, between the Lon; bridge and the Monument grounds. This is a bric sewer, which discharges all the filth from that bullding, where there are hundreds of persons em- ployed, together with all the waste from the differ- ent colored inks, ete., that are in use there. These washings pour out of the mouth of this sewer, fall- ing some fifteen or twenty feet on the beach, and ten find their way among the vegetation, cover- ing several acres with a black mass of crust, fester- ing in the sun in hot days and swelling with gas bubbies in rainy weather. The rank weeds, pecul to river'shores, thrive tn thls place, and itis im} sibie for the high Udes to float off the mass of filth, and as a consequence it has been accumulating ever since this bullding was erected. ‘The south wind has been wafting, for several days past, as It has Drought in previous summers, a most sickening stench from the river front. This | discusting and disgraceful depostt 18 probably the source of It, as itdoubtless wii be of disease, if It be not cleared away. ——— Affairs in West Washington.
