SCOOPING UP VAGRANT DOGS IN NETS—INCIDENTS. OF THE FIRST EXPEDITION—AN EARLY MORN- ING START FROM TUE PUUND—HOW THE DOGS ARE CAPTURED. ‘The campaign against the dogs was opened this morning. The tagless dogs have enjoyed for a month exemption from the perils of the pound, 0 that thelr owners might have ample time to walk up to the collector's oflice and settle. ‘The truce, however, was ended at five o'clock this mornin: at which hour Poundmaster Einstein's expedition sallied forth from the portals of the pound. The expeditionary force consisted of Gen. Einstein, Police Officer Farrar and three athietic colored men Skilled in the use of the dog net and versed in ail the cun- ning ways of canine vagrants. THE FORCE occupied two wagons. The one in front contained the poundmaster and the officer. Following this came a covered wagon, with iron gratings infront and rear. The nets mounted on long pol in capturing dogs, were secured on tue Sides of the Wavon tn such & Way that they were immediately avalluble for use. One of the colored men si Uttie Seat or step behind the Wagon. ‘It: Hon made its way at once to the heart of tie City ‘The first capture inade was on 2d street, between E and F. Iv was a shall black and tan, evidently a t whlch was trisking happily in the'early morn ing sunlight, little suspecting the dreadful fate that Was aU hind. Hence te expedition swept along to Capitol Hill, taking In mauy of the streets of East and Northeast Washington, and then again descended to the lower levels, obtaining In two hours a wazon load of dogs. ‘The traiied eyes of the poundimister detected dogs tar away on we horizon, which to the unexperienced observer Would appear only as a small specs without deti- uite charaeter. A motion of his hand was a signul to his forces to CLEAR FOR ACTION. | ‘The expedition wouid approach as near the dog | as possible with the wagons. Then two of the col- ered men would rush forth with the nets. Almost invariably their experience told them which way | the dog Would run, and his retreat would be cut off with a net. Somettines a dog would get a god start, and then the dog catcher displayed his Skill in thowing tie net. ‘rhe nev is so coustruceed that it the ritu or fraiue gets over the dogs head, the bit hetting throws Itself so as to completely eni the aniinal. When the dog was thus eumeshed the | dog extcher would seize the captive by the Rupe of | the neck, and soon land ulin beuiud the grating in | the wagon, MR. MONATAN’S DOG. He gave the poun men a hard chase along the wall “of the Capitol grounds, but finally patd the penalty of his unfortunate curiosity. ‘Thus (ue morning Was spent unUl the Wagon Was Pound.
