THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: EUESDAY. -June 17, 1884. Tax Stan printed in May 3,299 new advertise- ments, being the largest number ever printed in Any one month tn the history of the paper. The emand for advertising space thus far in June con- finues, and in order to meet it adouble-sheet will Be issued to-morrow. Advertisers will confer a favor by sending in their orders early to insure imsertion and classification. ————_<e-—_____ Ben. Butleris not at all sure that Cleveland can carry New York. Ben. may be prejudiced In this Matter, as tt is understood that he wishes to carry New York himself, but he nevertheless makes out a Plansible case against the governor. He notices the fact, foF instance, that Cleveland, though elect- 1 by the enormous majority of 192,001 votes over Folger, received only 80 more votes than Hancock Got in 1860, when Garfleld defeated him by 20,000 Majority. Again, though Cleveland was elected so triumphantly 1n 1882, his friend and representative ‘Was defeated the next year for secretary of state by 90,000 majority. As to Cleveland's record as gov- ernor, Butler thinks he has shown a disposttion to favor corporations, which will hurt him with the masses In making calculations on the vote in the close State of New York it would not be safe to ignore Butler himself as a disturbing element. If he is re- Jected at Chicago by the democrats he will owe them no special service and will feel at Hberty to Fun on the greenback and ant{-monopoly plat- forms. In that capacity {t {s quite posstble that he @an pick up enough votes to turn the wavering Balance. ———_<e+—____ ‘The latest Job of “tattooing” Mr. Blaine, washes Tight off. Evidently the artists were poor or the chemicals were bad. It was asserted that at the Tepublican convention in 1876 the real cause of the break in the Pennsylvania delegation which led to Blaine’s defeat was that William H. Kemble showed ‘the delegation two checks which he said he had paid Blaine for rulings tn hfs favor while speaker. ‘The story was gtvenin the Harrisburg Patriot in ‘the shape of an interview with Charles H. Bergner, ‘who was represented as authority for the state- ment. Inquiries were at once set_on foot among those ‘who would be likely to know the facts tn the case, ‘and the falsehood of the story soon became evi- dent. Bergner declared he had never said any- thing of the kind. Kemble said the report was an absolute lie, and so did Senator Don Cameron, Col. Quay, Mr. Cooper, H. W. Oliver, Chris. Mages and thers who were at Chicago in 1876 and in all the ‘transactions of the convention. ————__<eo—___ ‘The Saratoga convention, which opens to-mor- Tow, does not promise to be a love-feast, unless some pretty energetic harmonizing be put, in dur- ing the next twenty-four hours. All the factions are on hand in force, and Tammany, in particular, has all her war-painton. The lightning calculators of both Cleveland and Flower give their respective leaders a thumping majority of delegates, but their columns of figures depend for verification on “deals” at the last moment between the bosses. One plan for making it pleasant all around is to mame Cleveland for the presidency, promise Flower BBR A vu MM MMO} BBB 4 4) | 6UUlCUM MM Sens FT 46 SEVENTH STREET NORTHWEST, HIGHLY IMPORTANT TO HOUSEKEEPERS, HOTEL PROPRIETORS, xD BOARDING-HOUSE KEEPERS! Such a triple alliance might smooth out the present troubles, but it ‘Would not be a very auspicious opening for @ high- ‘toned “reform” campaign. ———_+e-___ ‘The campaign ts to begin “way down east” in ‘Maine, and thence extend systematically over the country from Calaisto the Golden Gate. As the first step Gen. Logan has gone to Augusta to confer ‘with the senior member of the firm. Ina day or ‘two Mr. Blaine’s letter of acceptance will be Issued, and then the campaign may be said to have begun. From all accounts it will be “personally con- @ucted.” Gen. Logan's visit shows that the cand!- dates will work in active sympathy, and both will, no doubt, take a more open and aggressive part in the struggle than fs usual. ——__— << ‘The Post is informed that Gov. Cleveland is “fully abreast of Carlisle and Morrison” on the tariff tesue. This should help his boom in the west, but At will “knock him out” for the New York sun. It 4s becoming more and more evident that the only democrat who comes anywhere near the ideal standard of the Sun 18 Mr. Dana, and perhaps he ‘Woulda’t pass muster. ————— ‘The practice ship Dale has been found to de rot- ten, and there is some talk of discarding her on ‘that account; but it will strike most peopie that a Totten practice ship 1s just the thing to prepare officers to command the rotten vessels of our proud navy. ——_—_~+++—____ ‘There doesn’t seem to be much kicking In this latitude against the republican ticket. At the Blaine and Logan ratification meeting next Thurs- day,the speakers (announced) will include Senators ‘Edmunds, Sherman, Hawley, Harrison, Mahone, ‘and Hoar, all of whom opposed Blaine in the con- vention. ——___~.___ ‘The Boston Ideals elected Col. Charles R. Cod- man director yesterday. The chorus is large and containg a good deal of unquestioned talent, but many think the company will “sing small” at elec- ‘ton time. ‘The same objection applies to Cleveland as to ‘Tiden;—he tsa buchelor. But Cleveland is not to 4 to reform. Woonwan & iia raece Wal offer on MONDAY, JUNE 16TH, 100 PIECES FINE SWISS EMEROIDERIES, 8, 10 and 12 inches wide, AT 4c.
