He says Blaine will carry Maine, Ohio and most likely West Virginia, in the September and Uctober clect! and that will give him New york by defwult. He refused to compare his trength with that of Arthura, but said Blaine could carry New York easily. “Bialue is a very strong man where his strength sald Mr. Mutehler, of Pennsyl- th 13 with the Communistic element, but tn financial elreles they are afraid of him. He can’t carry New York under any circum- stances, He will probubly carry Maine and Ohio— two states we don’t want—and he stands a good chance on the Pacific coast, But he can’tcarry a southe New Jer: tate, and he can't carry West Virginia, 'y hor. Connecticut.” A STAR reporter met Representative Gibson, of West Virginia, to-day, and asked him if there was y foundation in the claim that Blaine will carry . “It's absurd,” he replied; “we will beat Blaine 20,000 majority in West irginia. Our party Js united, and will poll, 1 tnihk, the heaviest vote thls year it ever has.” The southern men, however, speak of Blaine’s strength in the south as greater tha that of any other republican. “He can’t carry Virginia,” said Mr. John Ss. will come nearer to it than Mahone could. Mahone | 1s opposed to Blaine, you know, but Blaine will get | the respectable republican vote, He can’t carry any arbour; “no republican can, but he uthern state.” * he added, “#f there has got to be a repub- Itcan President no'man would be more acceptable to the south than Mr. Blaine.” Mr. McAdoo, of N. J., said Blaine would rally the old radical element of ‘the republican party, which began with Garrison. He weuld represent the real republican party, and would be antagonized by the independents. ‘Te thought New York was sate for the democrats, no matter who they nominated. Blaine’s foreign policy might be calculated to make him popular with the Irish, but It would not draw them off from the democrats. “And,” said he, “the people on the Pacific coast will remember that the democrats were the jirst to espouse the antl-Chinese cause, and that while the republican platform declares against the Importation of Chi- hese paipers, and favors land grant forfeltures, they voted against both the Chinese emigration Uill and the land forfeiture bills, both in the com- mittee and in the House. Even when the platform was belng drafted the republicans in the House were fllibustering to prevent the passage of the land forfeiture bills.” Representative Henley, of California, said: “Blaine is strong on one issue 1h California ‘and weak on another. He is strong on the Chinese issue, but weak on the corporation—the railroad—tssue, and that 1 the predominant issue now in Callfornia. Blaine 1s a corporation in himself—a direct repre sentative—because largely fntercsted In corpora- Uons. We (the democrats) can beat Blaine in Call- fornta, but we can’t do It with a free trade platform. ‘The républicans have inserted in thetr platform a promise to protect the wool growers. Now, we must protect that interest or we will lose Callfornia and Nevada. ‘That ts a big interest, and unless we stand by it we are lost on the Pacific coast.” Representative Tully, of California, says Blaine’s strength there 1s mainly in San Francisco, and con- sists of howlers, who make more noise than they do young. He Says any good democrat will beat Blaine in California. atlve Campbell, of New York, said: y ticket for the democrats. We couldn't ive done better for ourselves If we bethad the jnuking of the ticket, If we can't, p40 Blake and Logan, we can’t beat anybody. Yes, our paty 18 thoroughly united in New York, and we will arry Blaine 1s weak In New York.” Representative Wilson, of West Virginta, sald: n't understand why’ Blaine is any stronger in Virginia than any other republican. ‘They have attcinpted a fusion of greenbackers and re- publicans there, but itis nova success. The demo- crats are always united ina presidential contest, and I have no fears bf the result, Mr. Blaine has Mr. Blaine forthe presidency. It will advise no maa tO vote for htm.” The Herald says the ublicans will be sorry before November for “thelr fearful blunder” in nominating Blaine, and advises the democrats to nominate Tilden or Cleveland to insure success. The Sun says that a great many republicans are opposed to Mr. Blaine on account of his record, but that “those who imagine that because of such’ dis- affection, the country is now to witness a spirit- Jess canvass, and an eagy triumph for the opposi- ton, are, in our judgment, very much in error. Mr, Blaine is a fertile and’ sensational politician, and he will force the fighting from the start. Moreover, a party in power is always hard to beat; and the republican party can outdo in this respect, all others that ever existed outside of Mexico.” ‘The Sun warns the democracy that tt will be no holiday task to defeat the republican tcket; “that every advantage they may gain will have to be fought for in tremendous earnest.” ‘The World says that the nominations present an extraordinary combination of corruption and dem- agogism, but that “however bad Blaine’s reputa- ton actually 1s, his character is better than that of either Grant, Hayes or field. Demo- cratic prudence and ‘unity alone will lead to Mr. Blaines defeat.” The Trivune says: “James G. Blaine has been nominated by the people, and will be elected by the people. For a quarter of a century no other cand!- date has been more clearly preferred by the yoters.” The Tribune drops into poetry as follows: femmes Blaine he Will lead the party to victory. From Maine to California, from Lake Erie to the Gulf of Mexico comes the same refrain this morning. And the refrain is, in effect: ‘Which I wish to remark And my language ss Blaine.
