LATEST FROM CHICAGO. RUMORS OF CHANGES TO-DAY. GRANT AND CONKLING’S FRIENDS FOR BLAINE, CONFERENCE OF INDIANA MEN. WILL THEY TROT OUT A “FAVORITE SON” OR DIVIDE BETWEEN BLAINE AND ARTHUR? Soe Special Dispatch to Tux Evexmro Sram: Curcago, June 2—The Indiana delegation is dis- cussing this afternoon whether it will at the open- ing of the conventior put in formal nomination an Indiana man. The delegates, though they had several quiet consultations yesterday, were unable to agree as to who the candidate should be—Harri- Son or Gresham—in case it was deemed wise to Dring forth “a favorite son.” Brown, of the 6th Indiana district that it ‘Was his impression that in case an man was ‘not in the race, the 80 delegates would be divided between Blainé and Arthur, with probably a ma- jority of them in favor of the former. — Should Une “delegates resolve to put a candidate the wominating speceh. Ye tne delegation wil not e nominal put Harrison or Gresham in nomination at the ‘start il must not be concluded, Cé Brown said, that Indiana has no candidate, but, rather, ‘dhat Che representatives of that state are awalling a favorable opportunity vo capture the convention. RUMORS OP CHANGES. There is to-day a seething mass of people at ho- tels and headquarters, and there are rumors and claims of individual changes, here and there, from Arthur to Blaine, from Blaine to Arthur, and from both to Edmunds, Such changes, in Umited num- bers, are doubtless bogey © place. Occasionally an important one occurs, © that of the Arkansas delegation, but the net results are small as affect- ing “the felative strength of the candidates, and not to such changes, with one exception, must ‘we look for a solution of the problem. ‘The excep- tion 1s that by use of the leverage of self-interest upon the delegations from the south, delegations constituted and controlied by men who make a living out of this kind of work, a8 they are excluded from local or state politics, a’ sufficient number of them can be induced to "leave arthur and go to Blaine to make the latter the nominee. GRANT AND CONKLING MEN FOR BLAINE. It 1s one of the most remarkable features of the contest that most of the Grant and Conkling lead- ers who four years ago opposed Blaine are now working earnestly for him. George Gor- ham arrived to-day from New York, and says that Conkling prefers Blaine to Arthur, Gorham {s opposing Arthur. He also says that Logan would turn his hand in Blaine’s behalf be- fore he wouid see Arthur win. BLAINE AND PENNSYLVANIA. Senator Caineron’s return strengthened Blaine in Pennsylvania, and makes it almost certain that the 60 votes of Blaine’s native state will be cast for him it be needs them to defeat Mr. Arthur. Messrs. McManes and Disston, influential delegates at-large clatmed for Arthur, have arrived and an- bounced for Blaine, Hon, Galusha Grow sald he believed Pennsylva- Dia would vote for Blaine on the first ballot. NEW YORK BUSINESS MEN FOR BLAINE. ‘Three hundred New York business men, all for Hi) Blaine, will arrive Tuesday morning. If they |do not do Blatne’s cause any more good than Arthur has derived fom a simi- lar source they might as well remain 4m New York and attend cochelr business. ‘The Blaine management is showing up surprisingly Vigorous. Eikins,Chaffee, Donaldson, Platt, Bayne, Boutelle, Clarkson and a’ score of others ‘are un- tring. ‘There is a detatl for every delegation, and in many cases for every individual delegate, who 4 under the watchful observation of a Siaine worker. From rising to. retirement Senator Warner Miller, Wm. Walter Phelps and Whitelaw Retd do the advisory board act, Some of the Blalne men profess the greatest contempt for the Arthur man- agement, They say there 1s noone there bute jozen FLUFFY AND PUFFY SENATORS, nine of whom are opposing the delegates from thelr own states, and Frank Hatton, James D. Warren, and the New York business: men. Editor Clarkson says Hatton jumps around like a cat at play, and thinks he’s doing wonders; that Hatton never won @ ight, and probably never will MAHONE SAYS HE WILL WIX. Gen. Mahone informs Tas Stam that his delega- | tlon will win the contest in the convention as it | has tn the national committee, 3 LOT ON. Ht} RTH AND YIETH cd, of September Bariholontew. The delegation that I represent was elected by a regularly called convention; it was called as a republican convention, as the call will show. It has @ constituency of voters back of it and it is the only deiegation that fs worthy the name asfep- Tesenting the state of Vi “The expectation 1s that the other delegation will be seated and allowed one-half of the vote. Twant to know If they expect that? sen Ges they will nd out very differently. We the only delegation to represent Virginia in that convention. Itis instructed for ArUsur, and it will vote that way.” Col, Brady, who Was sitting by, sald: “I see that the other crowd are circulating ‘the report that I ‘voted for Hancock in 1880. ‘That has Deen so often dented over my own signature that I think it 1s folly to give them the dignity of a denial in writing ere.” ONE OF THE STORIES going the rounds is that Gresnam has written a letter to his Indiana friends urging them to vote for Arthur, and that the conclusion of the letter so stirred up the Indiana delegation, and espectally the Blaine portion, that a solidification in the in- terest of Ben. Harrison was one of the immediate ‘things of the future. Col. W. R. Holloway, of Indlanapolls, one ot Gresham’s warmest friends, put a guletus op this | by denying the whole story. “No such letter has been written,” he sald, “and there was no need of one.’ General ‘Gresham has said to his Indiana friends from the start, and he said it tome last week: “Don’t put me tn a’ false position. Iam for Arthur, and when I'm not for him I am Roing out of his Cabinet. Of course, if Arthur should drop out of the race and we can do anything for Gresham we shall do 80.” ‘WISCONSIN PRESIDENT MAKERS.
