THR COMPLAINT OF THE PEOPLE AGAINST THE Rall ROADS—SPIRITED SPAECHES AND MENACING CRIES FROM THE AUDIENCE—THE DETERMINATION NEVER TO RELAX OPPOSITION EXPRESSED IN THE RESOLU- TIONS, Ere. “The railroads must move” was the slogan at the head of a call for a mass meeting of citizens of South Washington, held last night at 9th street and Virginia avenue southwest, within a few paces of the raliroa tracks against which their energies are now directed. There were several thousand ple present, notwithstanding the unfavorable Weather. Occasionally during the evening the speakers were obliged to suspend on account of the noise made by passing trains. Good humor prevailed during the meetings, though now and then some deviaration by a speaker would call from the crowd ertes of “Tear up the tracks,” “Try Gov. Shepherd's pian,” &e. A stand was erected on the reservstion which accommodated the speakers, mibers of the citizens’ committee, officers of the iz, snd the 2d artillery band, which rendered iections at intervals during the evening. MR. ED. WRIGHT, the first speaker, made a stirring address, setting forth at lepgth the complaints of the people. OTHER SPEAKERS. Mr. C. S. Bundy was then Introduced, and said he perceived in this movement that two great pow- ers were arrayed agalnst each other—on one side the masses of the people and on the other a giant | monopoly. He felt at home among the people and agatust the monopoly. ‘Mr. John St. C. Brooks was introduced by Dr. Allen as a resident of the fashionable northwest. He expressed his bellef that If the citizens persisted They Were sure of success. He believed the time muSt come when these railroad centers will be re- moved to the suburbs, when the finest reservation in the city will no longer be disfigured by the rail- Toad tracks, When the personal rights of eltizens | Will no longer be encroached upon, and when the intercourse between the northern part of the city ‘Will no longer be interrupted. S INTERRUPTION. ‘Mr. Howard C. Clagett, the next speaker, was in- terrupted during the course of his remarks by the Tatiling of a passing train. “I am going to stop he sald, “unUl the monopoly gets through.” When the tain had passed, Mr. Clagett resum- ing sald, “That train was an’ illustration of how the corporation rode over them all.” Mr. Clayett made a witty’ speech suggesting the use Of the Capitol asa Union depot. “How,” he asked, “Would Commissioner Edmonds feel It & Rallrodd depot was placed at the corner of 16th and streets?” “There are first class people up there,” eried out a.| mai in the crowd.
