CROWLEY'S INFLUENCE. Several questions were asked to ascertain whether Crowley indicated with whom he had influence The reply was that he dd not say positively, but the whole conversation, as witness understood 1t, referred to influence with somebody in the govern’ ment. He admitted that Crowley inlgat have had authority from Bliss to compromise, and that he might hive meant that he had iniluence with Ott mah to persuade him to assent, but that was not his conception of 1. He insisted that the meaning was that the Influence was to be exerted with the government. Crowley called on witness to get in- Tormation to enable him (Crowley) to submit the facts to the government. Witness did not with- hold any of the evidence bearing against Ottman, He did tell Crowley that he (witness) was satisfied it would require the greatest exertion on the part of all the counsel of defense to prevent a criminal conviction of Otunan. Witness was satisfied of Otuman’s guilt. Crowley remarked tt would be bet- ter for Ottnan to take What he could get. ‘Witness uld not know What became of the $12,500 that was at Alexandria, nor did he know who the partles were between whom that money was to be divided.
