What I know and ‘What my opinions are may be given at some other time. ‘The matter to which Mr. Cook referred was deatmdarit, made by an obscure second-hand dealer that Guiteau with some other persons had been in his store previous to the assassination in- quiring concerning the purchase of revolvers, He re- Peated the language used by the ym whom he pretended to suppose Was Gulteau. The incident was published in Tag Stam at the time, and the next day, or a few days afterws T recetved a letter from the late William P. Copeland, who was then at Long Braneh, in which he said’ that the inter- ¥iew in the second-hand dealer's store was an 1n- terview with him and a friend, who went in there for the purpose of looking at’ some pistols, as he Was expecting te make a trip to Mexico and wanted to buy a In his letter, Mr. Copeland gave ‘the time of the interview, and gave exactly t lan, uséd. On investigation it was conc sively shown that there was nothing in the story ‘beyond What was stated by Mr. Copeland.” ““ME. In the Congregational council, which is consider- ing the relations between the Madison avenue Con- gregational church and the Kev. Dr. John P. New- man, in New York, yesterday, Deacon Foster, after rehearsing the action of the Ranney faction, said the call for the council was simply a call by a con- tracy of usurpers of the name and prerogatives ortne church. The statement that or . Newman had made an attempt to change the government of the church from Cc rationalist to Methodist, €F Some other form of government, he affirmed was untrue. Mr. Abbott called attention to the fact that the petition that was signed by alleged pewholders asking Dr. Newman to remain was made up of “multiplied names.’ All the names of one family were used, old or young, and many of the signers had only a single sitting in a pew. Dr. Ranney said that during Dr. Neemans pee mud go torate people came to the church as they Wo to the theater to hear a lecture, and he denied that Dr. Newman had ever notified him of his accept- ance of the pastorate as Dr. Newman claims he dtd. br, Newman was then invited to the pulpit, from which he made his address. He said he had ad- ministered the offices of the church in the best inter- ests in Congregationalism so far as he knew ho he would not change the complexion of the church. He had esteemed himself the legal pastor in view of the state statute and the manual. “I beiteve that I remain as pastor of this church with the con- currence Of those Who are the members of the church. Convince me that Tam wrong and iy Teslgnation will be handed in before the sun goes down.” Dr. Newman then solemnly declared that he had never thought of, spoken of, or suggested a change fn the church to"Methodism. . After Dr. Newian’s address the council decid to take no more testimony, and Went into execu- Uve session.
