TRE MEXICAN TREATY. ‘The Senate, In executive session yesterday after- hoon, discussed at considerable length Mr. Van Wyck’s motion to consider the Mexican treaty in Open session. It was finally rejected. An amend- ment to the treaty was adopted, providing that tt Shall not take effect until after Congress shall have passed laws to carry it out. ‘This was done to the objection to the treaty that 1t changed the tariff by the action of the Senate alone. im- Jlar provision was incorporated in the Hawailan Ireaty of 1876, to obviate the same objection to It. | ‘This amendment, tt 1s thought, insures the ratif- ton of the treaty by the Senate. but materially ys the time when it would go into effect. More au that, it practically gives the House a votce in determining Whether the treaty shall finally go | {nto effect or not. MINOR NOTES. A. 8. Remarks then being invited ex-Justlee Strong gave an account of what steps had already been taken and what {t was proposed todo, He sald that he regretted that, owing to the inclement Weather, the notice of the meeting, which Was read in the Presbyterian churches on Sunday, had not Teached all those who were interested in this move- ment. Some four or five years ago tli nestion of establishing a church in the northwestern section had been discussed in the Washington presbytery, and he with others had been designated as a com mntttee to take the subject under consideration. While the committee reailzed the iinportance of oc- cupying this fleld the way did not seem to be clear at that time, and after several meetings nothing further was done. About a year ago sume fifteen gentlemen met tn response to a call, and after cousidering the matter decided that’ tnmediate action ought to be taken. After examining a nuun- ber of sites they determined to secure the lot at the corner of 18th and N streets, and hold it for the use of church, tf one should be butit. ‘This lot had a frontage of 79 feet 6 inches on 18th street With a depth of 180 on N. ‘These gentlemen ad- vanced $10,600 and purchased this lot, placing upon iL adeed of trust’ for $25,000 fer the remainder of tbe purchase money. In order to ascertain tf the residents in that vicitity would Interest themselves in such a church enterprise, application was first mide to them for subscriptions, and about $16,000 was pledged. Pledges were also obtained trom others in ‘the city, So that the total pledges now now amount to 000. It was the intention not to erect. a cathedral or to attempt any large building at first. The only plan now in conte 9 apres was to erecta small chapel on the rear of the lot capa- bie of seating Som four or five hundred people, and if the enterprise prospered a larger butiding could be erected, and the chapel could be used for a lec- ture and Sunday-school room. They had, however, determined to tncur no indebtedness,” and the amount required to purchase the lot and erect the hapel had been fixed at $50,000. They had, there- Dut $12,000 to ratse, and they were confident UAAt Unis could be done. In conclusion he disclaimed any intention to tn- terfere with any of the exisling churches, and be- Ueved that this new church would be filled to a large extent with people who are at present not connected with any church. OTHER ADDRESSES. Mr. Wm. Ballantyne followed in a speech strongly commending the new enterprise as tending to strengthen Presbyterianism in the city and to contribute to the welfare of the other churches. He characterized thts as a mission enterprise and one worthy of the countenance and support of Christian people. He spoke of the mission estab Ushed in South Washington years ago by the New York avenue Presbyterian church, which devel- oped into the Westminster church, and the one in more recent years, on N now known as the North Presbyterian church. Members had gone trom the mother church to ald these new enter- prises, and the zeal of the members of the parent church had been increased. Rev. Dr. Bartlett and Rev. Mr. Wynkoop. ‘THE PROJECT COMMENDED. A resolution was offered by Rev. Dr. Bittenger, which was adopted, warmly commending this new enterprise to the sympathy and Iberality of Pres- dyterlans in this and other cities. ‘The meeting adjourned, subject to the call of the chairman. The following, ‘among others, were present: Rev. J. T. Kell i. Jewel, B.H. Warner, Fred. L. Moore, G. Gurley, Matthew W. Gait, Wm. Juanes E. Fite". D. W. Mahon and W. L.
