Henry Ward Beecher last evening gave, at the Congregational church, which was well filled, a delightful description of his recent “Circuit of the Continent.” Rev. Dr. Runkin, in introducing the lecturer, referred to his own recollections of Mr. Beecher's father, who, Dr. Rankin sald, with some emphasis, was Orthodox. Mr. Beecher remarked that he Was giad that at last it was established that his father was orthodox. and said if he had not inherited his father’s inental power, which was complimented by Dr. Rankin, he Dad at least inher- ited “his orthodoxy. The lecturer dwelt upon the Vast extent and resources of the country, devoting much of his address to a description of ‘the great Wheat belt of the northwest. He referred also to | the vast fertile region of the British dominion, and Predicted that within 25 years we would have an empire on our northern border containing six Umes the population of this country at the time of the Revolution. ‘These northern countries, where men had to work and provide for the long winter he considered as the no 73, AREA nursery of strong and manhood. He referred to the cordtality of his reception every where in the south, and contrasted 1t with the days when, he sald, Henry Ward Beecher could not have crossed Mason and Dixon's line without fear of “vertical resurrection.” He dwelt sometime upon the Mor- mon question, saying that the 250,000 mormon were earnest, enthusiastic, fanatical and compact. AS an evidence of their sincerity he said he had just Tecetved an earnest letter from one of the Morinon faith pleading with him to become a Mormon and sword couldexterminate the plague. Representative Shelley sald to a Star reporter to-day that he was induced to offer nis Dill for completing the sewerage of the District, which Was published in Monday's Stax, by the fact that. he thought, beyond a doubt, much, it not all the general {ll heaith in this city was occasioned by de- fective sewerage. It was, of course, he sald, im- Possible for the District to complete this Work at once, and the urgent necessity of it Induced him to rope the plan by which the general government ‘Would advance the money for the entire work; and the District retund it trough the ordinary annual appropriations for this purpose. It involved, he . Only the interest of te money, arid this would be more than made upto the general government by the saving in cougresstonal funerals. “What do you reckon this work will cost?” asked THE STAR. ‘ot more than two millions of dollars, certainly, and I think not more than a million and a-half! The interest on this money, you see, would not amount to very much, and, speaking earnestly, {t would be a great saving in the way of congres- sional funerals. I believe the plan to be practica- ble, and I think the District Commissioners agree with me. Itis simply a design to have the work done at once, instead of walting for a long term of Years. It will not cost any more to the District hor to the government. The interest on the money advanced being the only thing involved, the advance belug made without interest.” The vill will be brought up tn the committee ¥ery soon, and be referred to the Commissioners for suggestions. It is thought {t will then recelve ‘the unanimous approval of the committee and take precedence over stnaller bills on the District cal endar. ‘The work provided for, t 18. claimed, could De completed in a short time. gonads Affairs in West Washington Deatu oF R.
