Fre@k Dongtas: My Dear Frrenp: Though tt may seem late in the day to do so, I beg to congratulate you on your marriage, and to wish you and Mrs. Douglass long lives and great happiness and prosperity. You remember when you and I were in the Gar- field campatgn together, I used to tell you that you were a great man, and that tho vast crowds that asseinbled to hear you everywhere proved it by thelr presence and their boundiess cheers and praises. You always dened that you were great, and protested that you were only an ordinary man. But now that all the newspaper world 18 gossiping about. your marriage, and making more editorial fuss over it than it has done over the mnarrlage of any crowned head In fifty years, 1 hope you wf] no lonzer persist in your deprecatory pro- testations, Your friend, J. M. Daizer, MR. DOUGLASS’ REPLY. Private Datzetl: My Dean Stn: Your kind and generous letter did not surprise me a bit. In fact, I was looking for It, and should have been surprised If 1t had not come. Mrs. Douglass, not less than myself, sincerely thanks you for your hearty congratulations and S the nowshapers disregard al! my ast Lélng considered a great wan, so © the concluston to let them have thelr y without further contradiction, material upon which they base my ¢clalm to great- ness will soon be exhausted, and that they will per- force be compelled to own’ that Iam but an ordi- nary man, done but an ordinary thing, and that the e been fools to make so much ot meandit. 1 think this ts about the last sensation of which I can possibly be the cause. I do not know what I can do next to gain 80 bound- less attention as the fact of my marriage bas guined me, and already, Uke Wolsey, I am bidding farewell to all my greatness, There are a million of people in thiS country of mixed white men by colored women, know of a colored Wotan here in Washington whois the mother of ten children by one of our late most Iniluential cluzens, but no noise was made over the fact simply because the woman was his concubine, ant hot his wife, It would seem that what the Amer- ican people object to 1s not the mixture or the ut honorable: marriage between them. Is tion too severe? Perhaps It is, but docs hot the storm of eriitcism to which I Nave been subjected scem to justify It? You will be glad to know that your old co-worker In the Garfield cain verse storm now beatiug upon him, but 13, in fact, quite cheerful and happy. Tam delighted by Wiat you tell me of your pros- perity and Success in your profession. Long inay you flourish. Yours truly always, Washington, D. C., February 1, 1881. ee gee A Cuicaco Dox Jvay.—The young scapegrace, John Curtis, who creaied a sensation about a year ago when he tuyeigied Mrs. Dixon away: from her it.
