BURNT CORK. How it is Manufactured and How it is Put on the Face. From the San Francisco Call. The popular impression about the application of burnt cork by minstrel performers, which every man has absorbed from his own child- ; hood’s experience in the minstrelsy business whea the bara @oft served as a theater, is that it is rubbed oa the tace and hands ot the performer from a cork whose end is charred ins conven- jent gas-jet or candle flame; but this, like most Popular impressions, is incorrect. To supply the burnt cork used by the minstrel performers ty occupies the entire time and earnest aifeution of one interesting character. A little man, whose place of business is on the curbstone. on the north side of Pine. street, halfway be- | en Kearny and Dupont, and whose head | tches only alittle way above the top of the el in which much of his work is done, has, ars, been preparing burnt cork and doing nothingelse His personality hasabsorbed so much frow bis business that he does not look itirely unlike a huge cork, which, if tossed on the bay. would bob about’ with the tide ina pleasant sort of way. He is rather grimy, too, lke a hait-burnt cork. “The business.” he explained to a Call re- porter who chatted with him as he worked, is not what it used to be. There is more burnt- cork talent to be supptied, but where T used to | get a dollar and @ half a pound for the article I Touly get halt a dollar now. What istne | ss of making it? Well, a see, I firs I get them from the big. bot- | mostly, who buy lots of bottles of them with corks that wouldn't keep - air out of wine or beer. I pav four cents a pre U pound there, but sometimes I make a ten-strike in the suburhs, where I find a saloon or restau- rant with a barrel of corks they are gind to get rid of for two ceutsa pound. When I am ready to burn, 1 put the corks in those three wash- boilers ‘you see there with holes punched in their sides and bottom, sprinkle alcohol over them, and set them adre. Then I fill one of these muslin sacks with the charred cork, and knead the sack in this barrel of water. ‘That forces the powdered charcoal throuzh the sack into the water. Tam troubled nowadays with the tin that lots of beer bottlers put on the top of their corks, and the wire from wine bot- Sometimes they get into this sack and tear It, and I must look out tor that. When I have worked all my charred corks through tiis sack into the water, I drain the water through a close canvas sack you see in that frame there, and what remains in the canvas sack is ready for the artists. I put it up in_one-pound tins, and they use it out of that. When a performer isready to “black op,” as they call it. he takes a little of this black paste in his hands and washes his face, neck and hands in it, and he is blacked as you'see him on the stae.” As the reporter saw tne manufactured article it was a biue-black paste of a consistency of tooth paste. “Emerson's Minstrels use about a pound a night of the cork, and Courtrizht & Hawkin's nearly as much. ‘The blacked performers of the Adelpli_and Bella Union each have to buy his own cork, but the minstrel managers furnish it to the performers. The celiars (dives) use about & pound a Week each. Sometimes a snide show tries to beat me out of my pay, but I always cet even with them. How? Why’ I just put a little oil of turpentine in the cork ‘paste and they have a hard time getting it off. Once one of those ten-cent minstrel shows that gave per- formances in Unien Hall tried to beat me. I put turpentine ta their cork, and a performer | who had to wash up te do a Dutch act couldn't get the cork off his face and he bad to do bis Dutch act in black. This was enough fun for me. It don't hurt the skin a bit to put it on, but some of the ormers put on glycerine sseline to protect their skins. That is what es the shiny look to their faces you on some performers. It don't do them any good and makes it harder to wash the cork otf.” Sei tyle of Living. From the Philadephia Leder, Much of the misery and crime which now afflict mankind might be prevented) did each individual and each family regard it asa serious duty to consider deliberately and determine firnly what style of living they ought to adopt. question is too often set aside and lett to determine itself, sometimes from? an unworthy feur of looking watters straight in the face, sometimes from a mistakey idea that the sub- t itself is not worth special consideration, and still oftener from a theaghtlessness that lives in the present and dreams of no harm in the future ple drift into some particular style of living, w.thout any better reason than the past habits of ther patents, or the present hab ts of their friends, and without any definite investization as to whether it is suitable to them, and, thus drifting, the current often carries them on into rap.ds where their power of sell- coutrol sees almost lost. Then, too, those who are lovked up to for counsel do ‘not ‘always in- De | the body, protecting lungs and. sp culeate these plain, homely duties, which lie at the very root of morality aud in some decree elizion, with suflicient earnestness, and there arises a vazue feeling of the.r comparative un- importance, which is fatal to thelr faituful ful- filiment. In this country, especially, where the distino- tlon of classes is practically abolished, the temp- tatlons to undue expenditures are peculiarly strong and numerous. In lands where birth and rank decide for each one hix customary sta- tion, his aspiratious are lar-ely curtailed, and he is not often induced to overstep the barriers which universal custom erects. Here, however. there is nothing to prevent any man from as- suming whatever position he is able to fill, and nothing, therefore, to discourage him trom adopting any style of living which he may see fit. The shades of difference that exist among our families in this respect are so uearly perceptible that nothing seems easier n to cross one line after another. in- creasing each time the domestic expendi- ture. In thus following others, the ambitious man or woman too often does not know where to stop. Always looking a little beyond for an example, it is not strange that many should be Inred on to pass the definite bond: ries which they should have set up for them- selves, and to spend more than they ought. Thus it happens that suv many men who micht otherwise be respected and valuable citizens, sink into disaster, ruin and disgrace; that so many homes that miit be centers of happiness, are blasted and forsaken; that so muny of the young who start in life with bigh hopes and tair prospects are led gradually into courses of dis- honor and crime. ‘They drift into these sloughs, not throazh any dishonest intention or deliber- ate baseness, but simply because they have never seriously considered what style of livin, they ought to adopt, because not belog limit in their expenditures by any outside force of law or custom they have drawn no limits for them selves. Sometimes it is an ambitious wife who urges her husband to extravavant outlay of money, that she may rival or outshine her neighbors. The handsome equipage, or new fnrniture, or oostly set of furs, which, she declares, are noth- ing more tnan others have, may be the beginning of their mutual ruin. Kestrained by no eelf- imposed barrier, these desires increase and mul- tiply; the legitimate business no longer keeps pace with them; speculation is resorted to, and a liie of wearing care begins, bringing all kinda of imaginable «-vils in its train. Ste may plead that she did not know her huaband’s resources, and this is indeed one fraittal source of domestic extravagance and unhappmess. Never was there a more absurd fallacy tnan to expect a judicious regulation of the style of livins by one does not know the means at command. ether should husband and wite diseuss this matter, with equal understanding and full con- fideace; and if this were faithiully observed in the homes of our land the amount of financial d stress would be largely decreased. But the husband himself is much more frequently the cuipable one in living beyond the income of the household, his error arising from the desire to make a show of “living like other people” bet- ter off In money than himself (or possibly more reckless); # show that brings no real satisfac- tion, and that too often brings debt and wretch- edness In its tran. What, then, are the limits which a free man or woman, in a free land, must Impose upon him- self or herself in order to live honestly, consist- ently and without undue anxiety? Simply to contract no debts for the future to pay, and so to regulate the expenditure that, without reck- oning on extra possibilities, it comes easily within the known and certain income. Whether that income be small or great, it should never be exceeded—except when unavuidable misfortune compels. This is trite advice, but it is one of “No, sir,” said Winkleson, “I don't know ; fact is, you see, since I listened to three or four lectures up at Concord I have made it @ point to consider everything beautiful that I mong the Inmates of Moyamensing prison, Philadelphia, was abol- directors six months ago. The effect has been so bene! rcnipin ye ficial that the use of ued cutirely. those things which can hardly be emphasized too strongly or repeated too often. It is the only way to be Just, honorable or happy. When the means increase, and then only. can an increased. expenditure be justified; indeed, the gradual improvement in both is the secret of enjoyment in the art of spending. Whenever this is made @ subject of serious reflection, of resolute deter- mination and of conscientious practice it will rove the best saieguard against pecuniary em- rassinents and the best promoter of a peace- ral mind. ————--.-—___.
