Astor, the senior member of the family, resides—and it is built of the same colored stone as his tenant houses. Over the front entrance is a glass and stone inclesure devoted to flowers, which breaks the monotony of the stone walls and gives it a very pretty appearance from the street. Mr. William B. Astor looks every inch the million- aire. He is not pretty, but he is distinguished looking, 1s tall and stout, with a ruddy com- plexion and close-cropped mustache, and long- ish side-whiskers that grow straight down trom the ears. But Mr. Astor is very much afraid of getting too stout, and he used to walk all the way from his office, which was in the lower part of the city—Prince street, I think—up to his house on Madison avenue. This is about the only exercise that most of the New York men get. They dislike walking for walking’s sake, but will walk up or down-town once a day as a sort of duty. I fancy they find it necessary, because most of these bankers and brokers are high livers, and if they do not take some exer- cise are very apt to be ited with ills that come from high living. ‘the wealth of the Astor family now is said to amount to $50,000,- 000 apiece tor William and John Jacob, the two oldest. John Jacob has but one son, William W. Astor, familiarly known as Willie, the pres- ent United States Minister to Rome. William H. Vanderbilt ought never to lose his interest in hotels, for his father once kept the Raritan house, New Brunswick, N. J., which wae asort of a canal-boatman’s tavern. The house is there yet, just as it was in 1821, when the present head of the family was born there, and when a sign dangled from the door post Treading: “C. Vanderbilt, proprietor.’ There were very few financial giants in those days! es < Buried Twenty-two Hours, From the Dayton Democrat, October 19, Charles Heironymus, the unfortunate well- digger who was buried alive on Wednesday afternoon in the well in progress of construc- tion at the residence of Mr. H¢ H. Laubach, on South Wayne street, was rescued yesterday at about noon, after being entombed in the earth for 22 hours. The rescuing party continued theic work all night on Wednesday, and at ten o'clock yesterday they had succeeded in clearing the man up to his pantaloon pockets, when, by tying the rope of the windlass around his waist, they attempted to pull him out of his uncom- fortable position, but were unable to accomplish {t. The planks of the curbing, which, prior to this, had served for his protection, but which had prevented him from using bis hands freely, were then cut away, and Heironymus commenced to assist the men in removing the sand and gravel about him. Whén this had been removea down to about his knees aiter several ineffectual attempts to pull him out with a windlass, unexpectedly ‘another cave occurred and surrounded him with about another toot of sand. Notwithstanding this the workmen continued their labors, and at 11:30 o'clock they succeeded in freeing him en- tirely from the gravel and sand, which for 23 hours firmly held him pinioned in the earth. Heironymus was then drawn out of the well by means of the windlass, and when he arrived at the top, accompanied by the man who had been assisting in rescuing him, a loud shout went forth from those standing around. Helronymus was carried into the house and Jaid upoia lounge, and medical assistance was ren 5 He was very weak, but there were evidentl no bones broken. He was considerably bru however, and the circulation of blood in his lower limbs had almost ceased.
