ARRIVAL OF THE ENGLISH ACTOR AND HIS LEADING LADY—HOW THEY LOOK AND TALK. Henry Irving, the English actor, accompanied by his leading lady, Miss Ellen Terry, arrived in New York yesterday. Lawrence Barrett and Wm J. Florence, in a steam yacht loaned to them by Samuel J. Tilden, also Mr. Abbey and some friends in another vessel, went down the bay to meet the arrivals. Irving is thus described by one of a beat- load of reporters: His general appearance re- minds the \tor of Oscar Wilde. His long ke were too thin for fashionably-tight. trowsers. His Coat was an unpretentious sack. It was his head that was not ordinary. ‘The top of It, about six ere fect above his soles, had the of a soft felt hat brim, of the Buffalo fashion; but when he took off ‘this sovering. all suggestion of the border scout was gone. Although his hair was long and parted in the middle there was nothing effeminate in the general effect. _ His conversation Was devoid of alfectation. | He was nelther lofty nor patronizing, accent was 80 good that he might have been taken for a well-educated American, Miss Terry charmed the party. She had some bewitching’ trouble with her skirts in climbing to the gunwale. She clung with surpass- ing grace to Mr. Florence, who steadied her over the plank, and, finaily, she Sprang to the yacht’s deck with a laugh and talked Vivaciously. News Briefs.
