No event seems to be so uncertain as a boat race, The contest yesterday between the Colum- bias and Potomacs was a glorious victory for the former, yet until the race was nearly over the Majority of the spectators thought the Potomacs would win. The defeat which the Eurkeas and Crescents met at their hands at the‘late regatta, Tatsed the expectations of the Potomacs and their friends toa high pitch. An immense amount of money changed hands upon the result of yester- day’s race. Probably the heaviest betters, however, did not belong to either of the clubs, although the members were not backward in making or taking bets. The crowd which wit- hessed the race was very large, and no aquatic contest here has ever called forth so much excite- ment as that of yesterday. The racing of this able to cope creditably with any in the country. ‘The race was started, not five intnutes late, over the up-river course.’ At the word the Potomacs took the lead, but did not hold it an eighth of a mile. ‘The Columbias soon began to creep up on them, and, alded by a little wild steering on the part of the Potomacs at about the quarter, they were soon even With them. Then A DESPERATE STRUGGLE ensued for the lead. When the Potomac men in the referee's tug saw that the Columblas were holding their competitors and even passing them, Towing forty strokes to the minute, while the Potomacs were rowing forty-seven, their hopes fel. The Columbias gained the lead, but the Potomacs held on doggedly, fighting for every inch. At the Aqueduct bridge the Columbias were leading by nearly a length.’ Were the Potomacs made a desperate spurt, but so did the Columbias, and the struggle was’ magnificent, As the two boats swept past the Coluinbia boat house, with searcely open water between them, cheer upon cheer rent the air from the large crowds assem- bled at the boat house and on the neighborin; wharves, ‘The Columbias spurted again and ha increased their lead to a length and a half when the line was crossed. Time: Columblas, 9:221-5; Potomacs, 9:27. Although the Potomacs were bitterly disappointed at the result, they took their defeat as gracefully as possible, acknowledgin: that thelr men were fairly out-rowed, but consol! ing themselves with hopes for next season, Tar W.
