Atthe Metropolitan staDles to-day everything was as quiet aa holiday. This morning three cars were run out with non-striking drivers, but the men turned in thelr carson account of the taunts of strikers, who ranged themselves at dif- ferent potnts on the road. During the remainder of the day only twocars were run. On the %h- street branch two or three cars were run. A group of the Metropolitan road strikers occu- pied a position this afternoon on Bridge street, Rear the W. and G. stables and watched the oper- ations there, When a car came along with a new driver they saluted him with some such cry as, “Look atthe dude,” or “He needs a new coat; let him work.” A TALK WITH ONE OF THE STRIKERS. “Are you Metropolitan drivers?” asked a Star Teporter, approaching the group. “We were,” said one of the number. “What is the situation over there this morning? asked the reporter. “You can say,” sald the chairman of the mect- ing, Who sat on a fire-plug, “that there are two cars running over there. One of them is driven by the supervisor and the other by the stable Doss. And they are sundown cars, too. They won't make their appearance after dark. On the 91 street line there are three cars running, driven by the stable boss, the night watchman and the transfer agent. On the avenue line last night there were two hegroes drivin.” “Has anything happened to-day?” inquired the reporter. “Nothing has happened, and we don’t intend anything will heppea,” said the spokesinan. "We are going to maintain’ good order and discipline; that ts the bes: policy.” SURE OF SUCCRSS. “Do the men feel encouraged at all?” “We are sure of success,” said the spokesman; “you can put that down in black and white. ‘There ts another thing I wish you would stata, In the interviews with the presidents of companies It 1s stated that we get $2aday. There is no truth inthat. We are striking for $2 a day and 13% hours, and 20 cents for every extra hour. One of the 9th street non-striking drivers took out a car this morning, but turned in soon, on ac- count of the jeers and taunts of the strikers. He declared to a Stax reporter that he wouldn%t drive a car on the road under present circumstances for $5 an hour. STRIKE ON THE SEVENTH STREET LINE. A Sram reporter boarded a car on the 7th str2et line about 2:30 o'clock th! told by the driver that the drivers would all “turn in” If some one would only “start it.” “I know we will have to turn in when it gets dark,” continued the knight of the reins. “It will be dangerous for us to run after dark.” ‘The driver stated, in an- swer Lo questions of the reporter, that the drivers were generally satisfied with their pay; but If the delegate on their lne—Mr. Worth—turns in his car they would all follow. “There are twenty cars on this line,” he continued, ‘and nearly all the jmen belong to the Kalgits of Labor. {¢ one turns fn all will follow. ‘The men who don’t betong to the Knights of Labor wiil have to turn in, forjour cars will block them in the sheds” About this time tuere was @ meeting of seven drivers, including their delegate, quietly held in the caf sheds, and they all agreed to turn in on the next trip. ’On the return of the car the driver asked the men on the cars as they passed him if they were going to turn in, and Uuey replied that they were. The last advices received by Sur- geon Main from Mazatlan were dated September 16th.
